Real-world difference between ATA/66 and ATA/100?

For my next system, should I get a ATA/100 HDD or keep my current ATA/66 one? Current drive is a Quantum Fireball LP 30GB 7200RPM

I think that the maximum amount of bandwidth that ide can do is something like 35 mg ... I'm not totally sure, someone want to clarify?

Most IDE hard drives won't have sustained reads higher than 35 or 40 megs a sec. (I think my IBM 60GXP gets 39 MB/Sec).

The diff is your burst speed will be higher on ATA 100. I say it would be worth like $20 to me to go ata 100 over 66, but not any more 😉 It makes my system a tiny tiny tiny bit more responsive, and leave me room for faster drives in the future.

I wouldn't get a new HDD just to replace the ata66 drive you have now.

If you're going to get a new disk for more space, i'd go for the ata100. Prices between the ata66 & 100's seem to be minimal (just like the real world performance gains)

The only time that the maximum bandwidth of ATA66/100 is utilized is when the HDs' cache is accessed/transferred. This means no noticeable increase in performance, but it may seem a bit more responsive overall.

None. HDDs are having a hard enough time filling 33MB/sec right now. They can burst for more but substained is not that high. ATA/66 is just as good as ATA/100 for today. Tomm might be a different story.

The point is if you need a new HD for more space get a ata 100. Dont buy one to upgrade and throw away your ata 66.
