Real time capture and record from vcr to dvd-r?

Can this be done? I've got an ATI all in wonder to capture yet. I've only done a little research, but haven't come up with anything yet. TIA.

I guess I did a bad job explaining myself. I was wanting to know if I could do real time recording to dvd-r using an AIW card, and a vcr as the source. Or, I would like to know what is required to do real time recording from vcr (or video camera) to dvd-r.

johnjk, here's the device that has perked my interest. The new updated version of the Plextor Convertx http://www.plextor.com/english/products/ConvertX2.htm
Real time MPEG-4 directly from VCR, camcorder, etc. to DVD and now converts directly to your hard drive in DivX, plus let's you edit both AFTER it's on a DVD-RW. Way cool. It's not in stock most places yet. Newegg ETA is 1/11/04. I think it's around $160.

It depnds on what you mean by realtime encoding from VCR to DVD.

There is more that goes into making a DVD than simply capturing VCR composite input, encoding with MPEG-2, and burning the file onto DVD. Sure you could do that and make a data DVD, but it would not play on your standalone DVD player. What we do at work is record the file uncompressed, encode to MPEG-2 in realtime with the highest bitrate possible using a Matrox converter, then use a studio quality DVD authoring program.

What I do at home is something similar. I capture composite input, encode it, and record it to my hard drive. Then I author a DVD. That is, it is a two step process.
