Real Tek Sound problem

Been having this issue for a few days. I usually listen to headphones while on the computer for listening to music and playing games. The past week I've found that the sound wasn't working and did some searching and found the sound on mute in the control panel. Ever since then the sound has been distant, tinny and echoing. Really annoying. Tried different speakers but they sounded the same. It's a RealTek on a Gigabyte board. Any suggestions? Is the sound card fried and need another one? Thanks in advance.

First of all try reinstalling teh drivers for the audio. If it came with any additional software for managing audio then try that and see if there is a setting that is off. If its still no help then you may want to look into a sound card.
