I was listening to the Monsters on the way in today and heard that Bubba from the Monsters and Oddo from the Philips Phile were both laid off yesterday... apparently for no reason other than cost cutting. Both people were pretty integral parts of the programs and it just pisses me off that Clear Channel would just cut loose some of their radio personalities like that.

From: Talkers Magazine
Clear Channel Makes Further Cuts. Following the January payroll reduction that saw the company cut 9% of its worldwide workforce ? including outdoor ? CC takes the additional step of eliminating another 3%, or roughly 590 employees. Additionally, Clear Channel follows the step taken by some of the other media companies and halts its 401(k) match. CC says if it hits 90% of its budget goal for 2009 it will retroactively give back the matching cash. Many speculated the cuts would be focused on programming but it appears the reductions were pretty evenly spread throughout engineering, office support, programming, on-air and IT personnel. The bulk of the on-air staff let go appear to be from music-formatted stations as the company is making a number of tenured music jocks available to stations to replace local hosts as part of its ?Premium Choice? programming plan.

Both programs made Talkers magazine's top 100 list for 2009 - http://talkers.com/online/?p=267

I guess it is just a sign of the times where no one is really safe from job cuts.

Ugh.. I listen to Real radio regligously, and hate that this has happened. Every time there is a "change" in the show it takes me up to 6+ months to "like" the show again. It's really sad that it happened to them, as you said - both integral parts of the show.

Talk radio sucks. My favorite was when whatever the pop station was down there had the major falling out with the jock and he just decided to quit. Then a couple weeks later the female cohost upped and left, leaving the one guy left with a morning show that ... was ... pretty much dead.

A couple months later the original jock and cohost ended up at a country station... HAHAHAHAHA...

Clear Channel is shedding 590 jobs overall

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- Clear Channel Communications Inc., the largest owner of U.S. radio stations, said Tuesday it is cutting 590 jobs, including some on-air personalities, in its second round of mass layoffs this year amid pressure from the recession and evaporating advertising budgets.

Clear Channel's parent company, CC Media Holdings Inc., also said it will suspend its 401(k) match for all employees for the rest of the year, starting Friday. However, if the company hits 90 percent of its budget goals at the end of the year, the matches will be retroactively restored, a company spokeswoman said.

The latest cuts represent 2.7 percent of company's total work force of 22,100. They affect operational jobs like engineering, accounting and customer service, all in the radio division. The company also has an outdoor advertising division, which sells items like billboard space and wasn't affected by the job cuts.

The previous cuts of 1,850 jobs came in January and were also in the radio division, mostly in sales.

Clear Channel didn't break out the latest cuts by geography or job function, but said they do include some on-air personalities, whose identities weren't disclosed. Employees were notified of the cuts Tuesday.

It should have been Jana that was laid off. She has the intellect and personality of a box of rocks.

Crap 99x just came back which is Cumulus but makes me now wonder if it was because maybe 96.1 is going to go away, which is Clear Channel.

I need to get a HD radio...
