I think you were the only one on the planet who would have preferred that monstrosity in the first pic. When that design was first released there was such an outrage than SONY even took the hint and changed it back. Testers said it was uncomfortable, and everybody agreed it was ass ugly.

Also, the shell can be ground while the PCB is square (or several large/small squares). Otherwise, there wouldn't be a single round electronic anything.

never having had one in my hands I cant say for comfort... but it at least looked cool and new.
that said, I prefer the PS3 controller 84,000:1 over the 360 controller.
