real meaning of "schlong?"

We were reading out of our book in german today when the word schlong came up... and most people think of that word meaning a man's private parts in german... but our teacher told us that it actaully means snake. And while I can figure out how you can draw a connection between the two (we do use snake for our dicks sometimes in english) does anyone know if that word is accepted in german language as the actual word... or is it just a funny thing for us american's to laugh at
 
It's the real word, I think it's spelled with an 'a' though, but I don't have my dictionary in front of me so I'm not sure.
