Real Life vs. Hollywood

My wife rented "A Beautiful Mind" over the weekend. It was a movie (based on a true story) about John Forbes Nash Jr, a famous and brilliant mathematician that suffered from severe paranoid schizophrenia. At the time, they didn't really have effective treatment against schizophrenia, so he had a lot of obstacles to overcome--- he created the Nash Embedding Theorem and other breakthrough concepts, then ended up winning a Nobel Prize.

It was an interesting story, but they girled it all up with his wife standing by his side and giving unending support for him and his illness. My wife started getting all "Awww...that was so beautiful! There's not many women like that anymore!"

So, I looked up Nash's real story. The movie neglected to mention that his wife divorced him three years into his illness, and Nash also fathered a child with another woman and abandoned them. PWNED!

It's a great "spend the afternoon with your wife" movie, but I knew that situation was too good to be true :)

Indeed. Reading the wikipedia article on John Nash after seeing the movie kind of ruined it for me.

EDIT: and lol, his wife remarried him after he won the Nobel Prize, what a gold digger.
"The couple renewed their relationship after Nash won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994."

no kidding, that's what documentaries are for. Good movie though. Jennifer Connelly + Russell Crowe = pure win

I don't know, there was so much scandal in his life I bet they could have really spiced the movie up. Looks like he was a closet homosexual too.

It could have been truer to the real story and have them remarry and over-romanticise it (rather than having the wife look like a gold digger).

I see John Nash and his son all the time. They were always at the Burger King in Princeton and the pizza place at Princeton Junction. Gets a bunch of buffalo chicken wings there, eats a couple of them, drinks a pitcher of soda and scribbles tons of weird notes (mostly numbers - mostly a repetition of numbers) in his notebook.

Oh man, I'm swamped right now finding Mixed Strategy Nash Equilibria for my game theory class.

Why would I lie about something silly like that? My friends were contemplating stealing his notebook one day - but they decided aginst it, supposedly one of the workers there takes a page from his notebook everytime hes in there. I asked him what the fuck he was writing one day and he tried to explain it to me and it sounded like the craziest math mumbo jumbo I've ever heard.

I think the craziest part is that he orders like 50 wings everytime hes there, eats only a couple of them and drinks a whole pitcher of soda...guess he orders them for his "friends" but doesn't give them much to drink :p He also wears a huuuge winter coat and sweater even when its warm outside he bundles up.
