I have a headless file/web-streaming/MP3-playing server running Linux on an old P166MMX/72MB/1GB-fo-OS Dell. I'd love to move it over to WinXP to make everything work, including a print server, while not having to fuss with SAMBA, drivers, and USB, and all other fun issues. Think this box can handle XP?

I have a Celerom 366@550 with more RAM waiting in the wings to replace this box, but I have a few other upgrades to handle. Dual Athlon mebbe?!?!

SUOrangeman,

That doorstop you have is doing fine duty as a Linux server. Sounds like all you have to do is study a little Samba.

Why the heck would you even consider putting inferior software on it to have it run like a slug?

I would be impressed to see you fit WXP into 1.0 GB disk space. A default install won't fit.

Here's a hint your windows pc's all have names assigned to them like XF1T2C for example right ? Well with your Linux box you need to add your windows box as a user so Samba can allow you to access it resources ( files, cdrom, printer, etc...) and assign it a password. Also check out Samba's swat or webmin for some more help if you like.

the routing function on my 200mmx takes up about 12% of the processor underXP when I'm listening to streaming audio on a computer behind it. hope this helps in decision!

Adding some more memory on it (assuming your system is not max'd out) will certainly help. I recall when I had Windows 98, and added some more memory on my P233MMX that thing started to scream (relatively speaking 😉 ).

Don't get me wrong, my Linux server has been up and running for a while.

I'm streaming MP3s over the 'net just fine with Python and edna. I'm using SAMBA to share files with my Win2K install. I have MP3 playing on this box via digital-out, controlled by a MySQL database. FTP and Apache work fine. And I am only using about 600MB of disk space for the OS.

The issues I'm having with this box are mostly related to USB. I have a Nomad II that only connects to a PC via USB. I'd like to connect my printer via USB and share it out over the network. Eventually, I'd like to connect my USB scanner to such a box and share it across the network as well.

Now, software exists for Linux for my desires. However, I don't think the maturity of the drivers and software is quite there yet. Windows just has the "experience" and corporate support for these things *right now*.
