Well, if you are in the left lane, and the right lanes are completely open, and someone pulls up behind you, even real close, we who do that would like to point out you have been in the wrong for far too long of a time.
We'd rather pass on the left, like we are supposed to, but you are trying to force a pass on the right situation.
I only get up real close, and flash lights, when it appears someone has plenty of opportunity to move over. If they are actively passing and they currently don't have an opportunity to move to the right, I let them continue at their pace without pressing the issue.
It's when I come up to a car in the left lane, and a completely open right lane, I get very annoyed. I shouldn't have to pass on their right, when they shouldn't be travelling in the left lane in the first place.
Mind you, one CAN travel in the left lane, if the right lane absolutely sucks. But when someone approaches from behind, you 1) should realize this way before they are suddenly on your ass, and 2) should move over asap to let them pass properly, then you can return to the left if no one else is behind you.
I've seen numerous people weave through traffic all the time, without even giving people in the left an opportunity to do things correctly. Sure, it saves time, but I like to try and teach on the move. If I am able to get through to one person, and get them to understand they should not travel in the left when there is traffic moving faster than them, then I think I have done my good deed. People breeze and sleep through traffic school, and people terrify me with their lack of courtesy on the road. So I have to breach rules of courtesy on occasion - but sometimes good instruction requires an in-your-face attitude to snap the slow ones out of their mindlessness. 😛
