LAS VEGAS ? At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) today, TDK Electronics (Garden City, N.Y.) announced that later this year it will debut a new generation of CD-ROM rewritable (CD-RW) drives that will use MultiLevel Recording technology to achieve a threefold improvement in storage capacity as well as recording speed over conventional CD-RW drives.

According to TDK, ML technology will allow up to 2 Gbytes of data to be recorded at rates of up to 36X on specially formulated $2 ML blank discs, with up to 700 Mbytes of data on standard CD-RW discs at 12X rates. This is at least three times the capacity of current technology. TDK plans to scale this quickly to 2.6, then 3.2 Gbytes.

Key to the technology is the fact that it is IC-based, meaning no changes are required to the optics or hardware, beyond the addition of an extra IC to current drives ? though special media are required. Mitsubishi has already developed a rewritable phase-change disc.

I love TDK. But damn burning a 3.2gig cdrw at 4x would be death. I think the article said the discs would be out this fall (the 2gig ones). I can't wait to see these things in action and I hope Playstation2's can read cdrw discs.

LOL, can u imagine!! set it up in the night, only to wake up to a BUFFER UNDERRUN that occured 5 minutes after you went to sleep!! LOL...

it says that the actual speeds are quite a bit faster though. I do not know if current drives can read this without firmware updates though, more info would be nice.

My drive has burnprooof, but it would still take about 2 and 1/4 of an hour to burn a 3.2 gig disc, or longer.
 
Ummm...older CD-ROMs will be able to read this media right?

An IC chip is hardware, so I'm kinda confused about wtf they are talking about. Unless it means a firmware update or something? 😕
 
zippy, did they mention a CHIP? I don't think so.. I think they mentioned the a method of interpretation of the resulting reflection of a laser off of the disc.

therefor, a firmware update would seemingly all you need to read these, though we will see whether that is the case or not.

About 30 minutes for a 3.2GB CDRW on my Plextor 12/10/32a. 🙂

LOL, dude, you could back up ALL of your MP3s to one CD then hopefully play it in a car MP3-CD player- assuming those support this new format. 🙂 hehehe, that would ROCK!
 
It says for the new disks, it could burn at 36x.

Since 3.2 GB disks are about 5 times the size of standard 650 MB ones, it would take about 5/3 as long to burn at 36x, making it a little over 10 min to burn a 3.2 GB disc at 36x.

That's some good speed.
 
Thanatopsis, heh, that is damn sweet speed. Imagine using a regular ol' 650 or 700MB CD--lol, shweeeeet!

By the way, I wonder what they are doing that is so special to get it to burn at 36x by this fall- I mean, at the current pace we would probably be at about 24x by fall. 😛 12x early this summer/late spring, 16x this fall from Yamaha (others have not gotten there yet), so 20x late spring, then 24x in the fall- that's (probably- I'm just guessing based on the past trend) a 12x jump from out of the blue! :Q
