reading in input from a user

I am waiting for a few different user actions. One of them is if they hit the "enter key" and nothing else. How can you check if the enter key has been pressed?

In java and I am reading the input in through a BufferedReader

not sure in java, but I would watch for a newline characterin perl

if you use readLine() i think the string returned would be ""
