reading flash cards in xp

I was trying to set up a card reader for a guy today, and I was running into annoyances where Windows XP was throwing up write protection errors all over the place. XP threw up the error every time accessing a file for the first time, though any successive attempt at accessing file went without error.

this card reader
and a Secure Digital memory card.

I know the cards have a lock switch, and I've tried in both positions to no change in how XP handles the card.

Anyone gotten through this before? The card is formatted in I believe FAT16 file system, so maybe XP just doesn't work with that file system at all? And whatever happens, even if I could get XP to accept it as a read only drive that would be fine. I just want to stop all the message windows from popping up.

xp works fine with that system. If you have another card, try it in the same reader. Sounds to me (if its an old card) like the card might just be dead. They're only good for so many read/writes, so if its really old it may just be time to get a new one.

If you can, try using a Sandisk 12 in 1 card reader ... see if that solves it ... maybe the Linksys unit you got has an
old version of firmware on it or is bad ... also try it on another usb port .. the port you are using may not
provide enough power

There a lot of possibilities here, and I'm going to get a second flash card to play around with. I'm just hoping the camera doesn't have some sort of proprietary formatting - I've read from google searches about some that do, and the only way to get a blank or Windows formatted card to work again in the camera is to send it to the camera manufacturer.

Heck, could even be the locking mechanism on the card has gone bad so it's permanently in a read-only position.
