Ive been skipping around a lot but its quite an interesting book. The descriptions of the slaughterhouses and the people that work there are pretty horrific.

Almost makes me glad that I'm a vegetarian. I'll stick with eating my lettuce and tomatoes, while you munch on some E. Coli laced burgers. :D

I just try not to think about what they do to the meat. Though when I can I ask for my meat well done. Scary stuff.

FFN refers to that book quite often. I should check that book out too, although I shouldve read it in 8th grade like I was supposed to:eek:

There's nothing wrong with eating meat.

There is, however.. something wrong with eating meat that's pumped full of hormones and antibiotics.. from animals that are still sick, despite the antibiotics.

There's also something wrong with meat being 75%+ of your diet.

You can't deny that. :)

I completely agree. I wish my dad and sisters would pick better meat sources than BK Whoppers. They hardly ever eat them tho, like maybe once every 2 weeks.

Yeah, that was the intent of the author from the outset, to portray the meat industry in a shocking and disturbing way. Its a bunch of ideological-based rubbish. I mean, if you wanted a fair, accurate, and balanced portrayal of the gun control issue, you wouldn't go to Michael Beard or Wayne Lapierre...right?

Then why would you take the word of an animal rights advocacy wierdo?

E. coli is naturally found on all vegatables and fruits, virtually anything that grows in or on the dirt.

He also refers a lot to The McDonaldization of Society.

I'm on chapter 4 or 5 (haven't read much this summer on account of good weather meaning a lot more time surfing and a lot less time sitting on the beach of in the house). I'm pretty leery of the author's motives, as tcsenter points out, but I find the historical accounts of how Carl's, Wendy's, KFC and McDonald's all came to be very fascinating. Talk about guys living the "American Dream." These guys took zero and built them into massive empires. Carl's Jr. has its origins from a single hot dog cart. The guy that started McDonald's just kinda walked into the McDonald's Bros. drive-in one day and asked if he could start making franchises and they were just kind of like "Sure...."

Simply amazing.

I love the way Walt Disney blew off the McDonald's dude when they were both first getting started.

you munch on grass, run 3 miles everyday and you'll still drop dead of a heart attack at 60 :) I might as well enjoy myself.

Agreed. This is why I buy all our meat at the Dekalb Farmer's Market. The certified organic/no hormones/etc stuff is a bit more expensive, but worth it IMO. I was a vegetarian for a long time and just got sick of trying to get enough quality protein (important when you exercise as much as I do) and the lack of variety.

yep, Ive gotta drink coupla protein shakes every day to get enough protein (I still dont get as much as Id like tho). Im not a vegetarian because Im fearful of the meat contents, but rather because I dont think meat tastes good. Ive tried to eat chicken sandwiches, nuggets, legs, etc but always found the chicken bland.

The book is about fast food, not meat eating.

But... that said... my favorite part was where they tested the meats and found that over 75% of it had fecal in it. So to further the "canine incisors" reference. Dogs sometimes eat their own crap to get extra protein, I guess those teeth are good for more than just meat eating. ;)

I ask for well done all the time too. ... .. ..

man I'de gladly kill a cow myself to eat it ... or a chicken or whatever. I think that the way we eat now just lacks any all forms of responsibility .. not even the word I'm looking for but it'll have to do.
