hi, i am considering the purchase of an ipad. i have a kindle 3 which is cool, but cannot read pdf files over 100 megabytes. so this leaves me with reading on my computers 40 inch Sony monitor:(.i am using book scanning services, in my case, and they are very large PDF files, 400 MB for a 200 page book. what is the largest PDF the ipad will handle; i tried this on other forums and the answers are always what apps will open A PDF-- not whether they have successfully opened a PDF of the sizes i mentioned or larger on the ipad.

Thanks if you can answer this question:)

I was unable to open a 480 MB PDF on my iPad 1. I doubt you would be able to open a 500 MB pdf. Keep in mind that the iPad 1 only has 256 MB of memory and the iPad 2 only has 512.

I would suggest someone else that owns an iPad 2 chiming in with their experiences, though...

Btw, you might consider opening a huge PDF and saving it into individual chapters. This could allow for many smaller PDFs that the iPad could easily handle...

jeebus....can that not be converted in some way to get the size down, or is there a good reason it has to be/stay that large?

thats the first thing i thought of while reading it as well. i make O&M pdf files that are upwards of 400mb as well, but for some customers they have asked for smaller file sizes so ill make a ToC file that links to each section as an external file. much easier on their available resources.

Your scanning company should be running OCR and then converting to PDF. It sounds like they are scanning each page as a graphic.

I just checked a couple of software manuals and got the following sizes:

160 pages - 666KB
280 pages - 2MB
260 page corporate procurement manual - 1.5MB

how much are you paying for each book to be scanned? are these books that can't be found in electronic versions already? it may be cheaper and much more convenient just to buy them in ebook form.
