That a retail internal drive purchased from Best Buy on 07/22/2004 should have a 5 year warranty or a 1 year warranty. The quoted is cut directly from the Seagate website

Product sold into an EU member authroized distributor will carry a 2 year limited warranty. The additional year will be applied when an RMA request is being made, after a system check has verified that the product was sold through an EU member distributor and is being returned in an EU member state. The 2 year EU warranty is only in effect for purchases on or after the 3rd April 2004.

July 26, 2004 Seagate announced a 5 year warranty for products available through the channel purchased on or after June 1, 2004 (excluding external hard drives sold through retail outlets, including the pocket, portable and compact flash drives).

I would say 5 years, but since you posted this, I assume Seagate says 1 year. Are they saying the drive was manufactured prior to the changeover?

Seagate has a 5 year warranty on most of their drives. So if this is a newer drive then its definetely 5 years. I say that because some of their drives have 3 years, but none of them have 1 year. So it has to be 3 or 5 years, not 1 year

Seagate is claiming 1 year since it was shipped out of Seagate in May. I assume I was talking to an outsourced help center which was of no help at all. They say take it back to Best Buy lol.

Yeah that's a little BS trick they use. They go by when the drive was manufactured plus or minus some weird math, even though they say they go by the purchase date. I'm assuming if you provide an actual receipt of purchase they would honor their policy.

I actually was the beneficiary of this BS trick. My drive had a one year warranty, I had purchased it a year and a half ago, but it was still "under warranty" according to their BS database, so I got a free replacement.

Fortunately I didn't have to argue to get an RMA, the warranty is good until July. It just surprised me when it came up that way instead of the 5 years. When I tried to discuss this with the warranty department I assume I was talking to all outsource folks in India and really got nowhere even when I asked for a supervisor. Every person I talked to gave the same speech almost like it was being read from a piece of paper.
