Reaction to P/H67 defect - What will you be doing for new builds?

I bought SB and mobo on release date. My rig was dead and I was using an underpowered laptop for 2 weeks. I probably would buy whatever is out. My SB rig is buggy but it still works after a reboot so I can live with it for now

No, not from overclocking. My drives do not appear from time to time. In the bios, sometimes they are missing from the boot up sequence.

Here's my plan assuming Bulldozer is a winner (and that's a big assumption)

Replace my current P67 mobo with a mATX H67 and move my gear to my wifes rig (which can only take matx boards). Sell the regular atx board (once it comes back from RMA)

Get Bulldozer and have 8-core goodness.



Although if BD flops then I'll just RMA this board and just use the replacement.

I had ordered a P6 mATX mobo and 2500k cpu the night before the recall, along with most of the other components and then the next day NE sent the order out minus the cpu and mobo. The P6 mobos are extremely good despite the flaw. So I'll wait till they get the refresh versions out in a couple of months and continue with my build unless something better shows up. I doubt AMD will have anything better the 2500k/2600k.

For now: Use P67 with port 0/1 for SSD/Storage and port 3 for CD/DVD drive.
Later: Upgrade to Z68 and RMA+sell the P67 board.

I went ahead and built my P67 system. I have 4 SATA3 connectors which is plenty for me. It's only a defect if I'm affected, and I don't foresee that happening. When the time comes to update my wife's computer she will inherit this board, since she uses even less SATA devices than I do, and I'll pick up something else. I'm sort of meh about the whole thing.

I don't see what the big fuss is about, if you need more SATA 2 or 3 ports, why not just buy an expansion card? The flaw in SB seems rather minor.

You can't expect people to buy an addon card/potential conflicts, lose space on the motherboard etc. For a new item, one shouldn't have to bother with any of this. I wouldn't call a storage i/o problem 'minor'.

If you're happy buying a defective item for full price, be my guest.

the sticker on the box advertises X number of sata ports. if they degrade, in this case, the corporate stance is that product is defective. end users expect for all components to be working - and while adding an expansion card is the logical and least intensive fix, this leaves room for the customer to be unhappy about something - whether its a pci slot eaten by the fix or anything else.

so if its got 8 sata ports, all eight have to be working. if it says five pci slots, then four is not enough if the fix is to add a pci raid controller. from the consumer's angle, you paid for it, so you are entitled to what was advertised when you paid for it, or your money back.

THIS!!! would have ben myt answer if i hadnt already ordered before the news.

If my parts didnt arrive the day the NEWS on SB did I would probely have waited till it was all sorted out. But as I had them, I'm sure not going to send 1 part back and sit on the other 4 (SDD, Chip, memory and vid card or eat a 15-20% restock). Im not going to pin my hopes on some chip i know nothing about except rumours. But I must admit if Bulldozer comes out and is awsome Im going to eat some crow.

I went ahead and bought a P67 board, an ASUS Sabertooth.

I have it setup with a 2600K and am using it as if there was never a problem, and when they have a new revision ready I'll exercise their replacement strategy (ie "buy" a new revision board from ASUS, ship back the old one and get the refund on the new board, very minimal down time)

wait for ivy bridge or not even upgrade. overclocked E8400 @ 3.6ghz and GTX460 handles SC2 just fine. not captivated by any games out on the market that would actually tax my system atm.

The problem for most of us is overstated. e.g most of the asus motherboards have no less then 3 sata controllers - giving 4 working 6Gb and 2 3Gb meant for esata. Hence it doesn't matter that much that you've lost the 4 intel 3Gb ports.

It's laughable that you think the problem is overstated. Who would buy a new motherboard with any missing or defective ports? I wouldn't even touch a used one at half the price. Most boards I've seen have 4 of these 3G ports (not meant for esata) and 2 6G ports. D:
