I can write free checks using citibanks website. If they can't send it electronically, they will print the check, stick it in an envelope, and mail to the person, all at no cost to me.

Unless you like holding up lines at the supermarket, why would anyone want to write out a check?

I don' use many but had to use them for:

Paying taxes - I do it online. Bank will mail check if it can't be paid electronically.
Deposit on house - Did with bank online - I knew how much it would be so I prepared in advance for it. Have bank mail you the check directly if you don't want to mail it elsewhere. It's sort of like going in and getting a cashiers check.
Paying HVAC guy and electrician - I always get a bill to pay within XX days. Plenty of time to do it online.
Auto mechanic - saves him money instead of paying him by cc - CC points for me > saving him money.
Starting-up direct deposit at new job - they request a voided check - I just made a copy of one of my checks for my job, didn't have to "write" one.
...

You don't attach the check to your tax form? Do it online and pay the fees? ie. State Taxes

Instead of just writing a check right then and there, you'd rather do it online and wait to have it mailed to you? You must have also had a check mailed to you for $500 to carry around in case you wanted to submit an offer on a home?

What happens when the cost might change during the installation due to an unforeseen issue?

My auto mechanic charges me less for paying with check and helps to develop a good relationship

Sounds like you prefer to do things the hard way. Instead of paying $5-15 for a box of checks and having the option to use the best method of payment at the time.

My state taxes are directly withdrawn from my bank account. My r/e taxes I can't pay electronically but just fill out the info on my bank website and they mail a check on my behalf.

I was renting my house before I bought it and knew all the details ahead of time. There was no spontaneity....

Costs may change during installation but it is still billed at the end, due anywhere from 14 to 60 days later. I've never had someone insist on me paying them right then and there.

I get my work done at the dealership and they don't offer such incentive.. (their service prices are actually competitive and they are very competent, unlike many other places I've tried in the past)

Really there is no effort to it. Sign on to bank. Click on Bill Pay. If payee isn't in there, add address. Enter dollar amount and date for the payee to receive money and submit transaction. Done.

I still have my original box of checks in my attic somewhere from when I opened my account 10+ years ago. I've used maybe ~50 of them the entire time. Most of that was in college before I discovered the wonders of online bill pay.

I pay as many bills as I can online but would never want to spend the time to have a check mailed to me and have to wait for it when I can just write one out.

And every time I've had a contractor come to my house to do some work, they wanted payment upon completion of work.

This whole process is way to hard for you to be able to complete on your own. For a small fee I could take care of the ordering for you. Please PM me your address and bank account info and I will make sure the checks arrive at your residence promptly.

I didn't really have to wait on anything though. I knew I would be signing on a certain date more than a week ahead of time (although I admit my situation may have been a bit more unique). The check was there well in advance. It may have taken me longer to dig through my boxes in the attic to find my check book :p

why do you guys like the carbon copy ones?
proof of payment?
I like the carbon copy specifically because I hardly use checks (less than 30 in the past 6 years). I can look through the carbons and see what I've done in the past.

I pay everything that I can with a credit card. I transfer money between banks through linked accounts. I automatically pay my rent by having Citibank send a check for me every month. I hardly need checks... but sometime I need them.

My dentist is old school. He doesn't take credit cards, so I send him the co-pay using a check.

I make IRA contributions with checks, and I use the carbon copies to keep track of how much I've contributed per calendar year. It's poor accounting practice, but that's what I do.

I think I've paid for parking tickets with a check.

Checks are only as obsolete as fax machines... and I still need to use those once or twice a month.

do not order from bank... there are plenty of cheque printers online and they are a lot cheaper than banks. just send them a voided cheque and they'll print it up for you.

Yes but with some (most?) checking accounts you can go on the banks website and fill out who to pay and how much to pay them, and the bank will mail them a check at no cost.

Wait, what? So with the US banking system, you make an electronic transfer, then the bank prints a physical check and mails it to the other bank, who turns it into an electronic deposit? WTF?

No. Some companies may not have a system set up to accept electronic transfers, so the bank prints a physical check and mails it to the payee.

So that's a "yes" then?

No. Because what you wrote suggests that you were paying twice. You are not doing any electronic transfer. The bank is simply printing a check on your behalf and it acts like any other check you write by hand.

It's like if you want to pay your landlord and he doesn't have an account for you to deposit to directly. You tell your bank to send him a check. Money is still in your account until the landlord deposits the check into his own accounts or cashes it out. No electronic transfers involved beyond interbank stuff for the process of handling checks.

Yeah that's bizarre. Why don't your banks support a straight electronic transfer between one-another?

last time i had to "order" checks, was when i changed my address.

If i need to get more checks, my bank does it for free.. no charge.

I don't need checks with Winnie the Pooh, or Chevy Cars.

Plain checks work for me.

The last time i had to pay a check for something, was last week, for my son's kindergarten field trip. They wanted a check. <shrug> Before that was last month, for my registration. Yes i could pay online, but the DMV charges $9.95 for online payment processing.

And if i need a copy of a check.. i can get an image of the check via the bank's website.

People still use checks? Why?

Maybe it's different in Kiwi land but over here it's wise to pay rent with a check, you'd be dumb to pay with cash. Also my finance company for my car only took checks for my final car payment. Send checks with certified mail, guaranteed to get there. Any contractor that works on house as well. Checks are still used in tons of places and for many reasons.

It's funny... when your money looks like it was made by Parker Brothers... i'd sooner pay with a check than cash.
