Re-occuring CHKDSK error

My computer is a couple of weeks old, and already I am getting the same re-occurring CHKDSK error message that I got on my old computer.

I run CHKDSK, and it tells it it "discovered free space marked as allocated in the master file table (MFT) bitmap". I run CHKDSK/F to no avail. I got this message consistently on my other computer as well. Does anyone know why this is occuring, and if there is a way to actually fix it?

If chkdsk ever returns a message with the word "unrecoverable" it means what it says. A new filesystem (format) is the only thing that will fix that.

If you aren't seeing "unrecoverable" then chkdsk should be able to sort out just about anything. If errors keep repeating, run a chkdsk /R to be sure there are no bad sectors (one sitting right under the MFT will give you major trouble). Once the chkdsk /r is complete you should see NO further errors. If you do then your drive or controller are likely failing. Events to look for in your system log: 7,9,11,26 (popup messages), 50, 51, 55. Those will be strong indicators of hardware trouble. Also chkdsk runs requiring a dismount+reboot will log in your application log as a winlogon event.

Bad block or something to that effect? Do a chkdsk /R on it. A bad block or two on a disk is not entirely uncommon. If you have ever increasing 7s that lead to say a 55 then big trouble is brewing. If the chkdsk /R doesn't clear up the 7 then that would be bad too.

You may also see a spew of these on a dirty CD that the drive is having trouble reading.
