I would like to buy a Motorola RAZR, but I don't really know what to look for. I know there are several different versions out there--V3, V3c, V3i, V3m, etc. And then there are different versions of those versions, software-wise .

The V3i is out of the question, mostly because iTunes is a feature that I don't see myself using. I want to be sure to get the one that has quad-band. And would also like it to be a "good version" so to speak...meaning it has bluetooth file transfer on it and all that. And it also has to be compatible with Alltel. And I'd like it to have a memory card slot for whatever memory card it takes (mini SD?) so I could hold pictures on it and stuff. And I would like it to have the higher resolution camera (1.4mpx?)

I just don't know where to start looking, really. I have my WTB thread ready to be bumped, but I need to make a more detailed description of what I'm looking for in it before I bump it. And plus all the information would help just in case I find a deal on eBay :)

Thanks!

-Jared

After reading about cell phones, I read about my current one--Motorola v60x. It uses AMPS 800 and some other CDMA frequencies. I now understand why they put the "c" in "V3c"--for CDMA. So with that said, it looks like Alltel doesn't use GSM?

Edit: Updated description with camera information

Can anyone confirm this? Otherwise I'm just going to call Alltel and ask them which phones they do not support. I'm just trying to avoid their lengthy hold time on their phones.

Alltel is a CDMA provider so it can only do the V3C and it should have the V3M soon. But the V3 and V3I are GSM.

Could I buy the V3m now and then would it work right now (on CDMA) and then later on when/if they upgrade?

IF the phone is usable on either Verizon's or Alltel's Network, you will be able to use it.. Here is some advice.. stay away from the RAZR.. batterly life is awful when compared to others offerings...

Firmware fixed this problem, and it wasnt a problem at all on the Alltel version.

The title looks like the title of a spam mail.

On topic though, Dunno about Motorola. Nokia FTW! :)

My brother had a RAZR on Verizon and said the battery life was garbage. Friend of mine has a RAZR on Alltel and it works NICE! Battery life is very good.

Is there such a thing as extended life battery for these things? Are all RAZRs--whether they be V3, V3c, V3m--bluetooth compatible? If so, is it all the same? It doesn't sound like it is.

I have Alltel service and recently got a V3c.

As said, the V3 and V3i are out because they are GSM.

Alltel didn't have the V3m when I got mine at the end of May, but they may now. They might not necessarily sell it but if its CDMA you can still use it. Its just its very hard to find a good deal on a phone if its not with a contract.

But you'll probably want the V3m. I believe that is the one where they added a miniSD slot as well as mp3 player functionality. I REALLY wish I had that with the V3c, but as I said I dont belive my local Alltel has the V3m even yet so I wasn't gonna wait on just that phone plus I doubt it would be as cheap as the $100 V3c.

With Alltel firmware phones, Bluetooth is not locked down. For example, the Verizon V3cs have a supposedly crap Verizon interface as well as locked down Bluetooth (no OBEX). I dont use Bluetooth but I hear a lot of Verizon users flashing their firmware to Alltel to get the regular Moto UI as well as unlocked Bluetooth.

I do believe there is a larger batter for the Razr but I hear its pretty pricey. I am quite impressed with the battery life on my V3c. It generally lasts about 4 days (though its only on about 12-16 hours a day) before I need to recharged and that isn't even letting it drop to Low. The call reception and quality is very good on the V3c (and I assume V3m) too.

Anymore questions, just ask.

But basically I would check out your Alltel store and see if they have the V3m yet or if not ask them when they expect to get it. Buying one with a contract is to me, the only way of getting one cause no way in hell would I pay $300 for a phone.

Only two phones you'll be able to use on Alltel are the V3c (which they sell) and the V3m, which AFAIK, only Verizon sells; ask Alltel if you can use the V3m on their network. Verizon is supposed to be getting the new KRZR K1m soon, might wanna wait for that too.

I've been moderaly happy with mine, although it tends to lose its charge very, very quickly. If I use it frequently, it will drop to "low battery" and finally die after only 10-15 hours. :(

^ If you've been yapping for 2.5-3 of those 10-15 hours, you'd exhaust the battery on this and most phones. ;)
