What mod locked this thread? It's no different than a thousand other links in the hot deals forums. Obviously, the company targets a specific segment of the population and gives away their freebie in exchange for marketing information you provide to them. If you don't fit the profile then they have no reason to send the gift to you...

Locked thread

In order to get this, you must lie about what you do. We do not condone this sort of "HOT DEAL".

That doesn't make sense...

As much as I love free deals

I agree with the mod
signing up for stuff by submitting lies :disgust:

hurts the company involved and debases yourself

Lock all these type posts

p.s. for crappy posts like this I NEVER see things like:
<< If you are in the stainless steel
modification mfg. business here is a free tshirt for you>> :disgust:

There is no way around this scenario
You are committing fraud on this company

Gotta agree with BooneRebel. I don't know what occupation it may have been that is impossible for us to be engaged, but I think it's silly that the mods would lock up such a link. Let alone, you gotta love the fact that this board seeks to dictate morality. If it's a publicly available page, then a person should be able to point it out (if it's a so-called hot deal like a freebie, whatever). I can understand the no coupon code thing and the no links thing and the suggestions of illegal activity thing. But I don't think the poster suggested anything illegal. Also, there probably weren't any codes in there or disallowed links (whatever those may be).

Put a bunch of high-schoolers in charge and this is what happens . . .

Who was so sure there weren't members of AT that are in this occupation? Was it something like snake wrangling?? That's my part-time gig!! Bring back the thread! :D

While I never lie on the surveys that I fill out, I do think it's lame that the Mods would attempt to "dictate morality." Further, the company offering the survey should be aware and prepared to receive fraudulent entries.

Unfortunately, the following facts override:
A)Not everyone on this board is exactly scrupulous. How many people here filled out the form saying they were involved in whatever industry so they could get the free pen?

B)Anandtech could potentially be held liable for allowing the post to stay and helping all the people in (A) commit fraud. Maybe it's not a criminal offence and maybe it wouldn't hold up in a civil court, but do you really think a young college student has the time or financial means to take them to the bench on it?

You shouldn't get upset if a thread gets locked...this board isn't a free country, and the mods have to do everything they can to protect themselves.

That's pretty lame to single out certain threads. The pizza hut "Hot Deal" you had to sign up saying your kid completed his summer reading program, and you'd get a free pizza coupon. I doubt even half the people who signed up for that actually have kids, much less completed some summer reading program...

I'm not horribly upset or anything. I don't really think Anandtech could be held liable for much. People can get to the page themselves anyway. Not like the guy committed any crime by posting the link. There was no suggestion to commit fraud. Anandtech is hardly contributing to the commission of fraud by letting (what I assume to have been) an innocuous post stand. I don't get it.

Oh well.

Good points!

And what about the 298347982 Anandtechers and Fatwalleters and Techbargainers that got in on the Acer deal for $130 in Flooz to resellers? I bet every single one of them was a legitimate reseller too! :)

Of course, Acer is not blameless in that fiasco, they should have checked closer. Many folks were glad they didn't though!

Mr or Ms Mod.
I filled out the survey 100% accurately. Glad I saw it before you threw a lock on it.
Thanks BooneRebel . Don't let the B$st#rds get you down.

I hope I'm not being too simplistic, but it seems to me that if you don't like the rules, much less the philosophy or ethical bent of AnandTech forums -
Get the hell out of Dodge.

Better yet, create and moderate, (or not), your own forums.

Honor is still a value even among the computer literate.

By the same token, if you don't like what you read in this forum ... what should you do? Get the hell out of Dodge? Don't get excited; just askin'.

In a word, yes.

Actually, that really is a too smug an answer. Forum issues are discussed often heatedly and passionately in the appropriate arena. But the definition of a Hot Deal in AnandTech, as I understand it, precludes chicanery, lying and cheating. Appropriately so IMO. What I fail to understand is someone taking exception to this. If one's personal moral code dictates a win at any cost mentality then perhaps AnandTech Hot Deals Forum is not for you. Move on.

BUMP FOR LOCK
The original post was a hot deal for a few. This thread is not a good deal for anyone but Bellgoober, who apparently thinks it's his job to accuse others of "chicanery, lying and cheating".

Yep, you are being too simplistic. Arbitrary rules, without explanation and without clarification, are for most people distasteful.

And, are YOU responsible for dictating how I should conduct MY business and what kind of ethical rules I should follow?

When I fill out those forms, I choose not to lie on them as well. However, I want the choice to be given to me as to whether I see them. If all of society were to follow your thinking, and the example that was set by the AT moderator, then we could all just move to communicst China or Cuba or wherever.

And, please point out the rule saying that surveys for freebies are not allowed to be posted.
