It would help to know what operating system you're running, how did you "remove" Microsoft Security Essentials, and what you mean by "Windows update and many others that do not come to mind right away."

Try this for a start: Help and Support for Microsoft Security Essentials

Hi there,

I have a Dell laptop with Windows Vista home premium op sys.
I removed MSE by using perfect unistaller. When I say many others I am referring to any methods I could find and Help and Support for Microsoft Security Essentials is one of them but this did not assist me.

Thank you for your help so far.

Unfortunately, this can be the result when you use a 3rd party removal program. Especially with antivirus stuff, given how deeply it integrates into the OS, it is a good idea to remove it using the manufacturer-provided removal process.

Please make sure to back up your registry before you follow this process. Even though it isn't exactly the problem you have, at least part of MSE is obviously still installed which is what is causing your problem - you need to get rid of it to be able to reinstall. I hope you know whether you were running version 1 or 2 of MSE, because it makes a difference.

Manual removal of Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.1963 (i.e. current MSE version is version 2):

Manual removal of Microsoft Security Essentials 1.0.1963 or earlier (prior MSE version):

I managed to re-install it by removing Malware-Bytes Anti malware.
Now it stops when doing a full scan quite early on in the process.
It was stuck over 2.5 hours in to the scan so I stopped the scan.

Can anyone help please?

Thank you,
