Re-install Drivers When Swapping From Geforce Ti4600 to 6800 OC?

Finally tracked one of these bad boys down and now I'm ready to pop open my case and swap out my old card ... Do I need to re-install my driver - 66.77 - when I put in the new card? Maybe switch to VGA inbetween? Or can I just pop it right in and use my current driver instalation?

Please respond ASAP as I can't wait to see how this baby does ...

go 4 it . . . . all the nVidia cards use the same unified drivers . . . .(just like ati) . . . . pop it in . . .

HOWERVER, you MIGHT consider the very latest nVidia drivers . . . . i see a topic extolling the virtues of their very latest (i think it's 70.09)

edited to correct spellling and grammar (i hurried to reply . . . . )

ENJOY your new card . . . . nice upgrade!

Reinstall those drivers! I seem to remember being able to swap cards in the past without reinstalling the drivers, but not anymore.

When I bought my 6800 I dropped it into my wife's computer (only comp with Windows in my house) for a couple of benchmarks. Performance was nothing like I expected over her Ti4200, until I reinstalled the (latest) drivers. That made a world of difference. After swapping the Ti4200 back in Doom 3 was a slide show until I reinstalled the drivers (yet again).

Thanks Anonymouse!

After swapping cards I was getting some pretty chunky frame rates in Doom III, Call of Duty, etc ... The screen would pause right when the game started for a second or two, then it would play okay but not all that smooth, some stuttering, etc ... The Far Cry demo is a total slideshow right now. Definitely something wrong ... Reinstalled forceware drivers, motherboard drivers, and DX9c and saw a big improvement. Far Cry still wont run correctly though. I'm going to keep trying various tweaks and if I can't get up to par I'll start a "Chunky frame rates" thread, see if someone here can help me. Thanks again you guys for responding!

Make sure ALL of your drivers are up to date!

Also be sure to have the latest ver. of dx9 for FC and it's PATCH (it won't run too well w/o it).

Usually - if your rig was up-to-date driverwise - you can simply swap cards w/o reinstalling the videocard drivers.

Finally, have you looked at 70.90?

I think all my drivers are up to date. Not totally sure on the motherboard though. I just installed the VIA 4-in-1 drivers, v455, but I haven't updated the BIOS ... Do you know if I need to do a different AGP update, besides the 4-in-1? I have dx9c, which is the latest.
I just tried the 70.90 and they did not work at ALL on my setup ... graphics in Doom III were corrupted and I got lots of crashes, so it's back to the 61.77s for me for right now at least ...

Thanks for responding, appopin!

not sure what you mean about a separate AGP update?
(you probably need to go into BIOS and set your aperture size higher . . . a MB BIOS update might be a good idea - check what it does on the mfg's website)

So how's it going now?

Also, do not forget to defrag your HD . . . . some of the latest games are really demanding - HL2's famous in-between levels "stutter" was helped after i defragged (along with their mini-patch). 😉
