Re-initialize USB Ports

I have a USB device that whenever I insert it into a different USB port on my machine, it will tell me that it has found new hardware and sets it up. If I reinsert the device into that same port again it just allows me access to it.

I think the install on two of my ports (both on the front of the PC) failed. So now when I insert the device into these ports, the computer does not recognize or see it. If I plug it into one of my other USB ports, it sees it fine now.

Is there anyway to clean the list of devices installed on a specific USB port so that when I insert the device it will "recognize" it as new hardware?

does anything else work in the front ports? it's possible that it came unplugged. I've never had an issue with a usb port failing to install a device then never trying to install it again, maybe try to reboot?

All my other devices work fine on those two USB ports, so I don't believe there is anything wrong with them. I just need to find some way to think that it never saw this device on these two ports so that I can have it "find" it again.

Plug it into one of the 'bad' ports and look for the device in windows device manager then right click it and click "uninstall". Then remove and reinsert the device into the USB port and it should isntall the driver again.

If that doesn't work and we are talking about a rear ports work vs. front ports don't problem it could be that the device is USB 2.0 and the ports that aren't working are only USB 1.1.

I'll give that a try. I'm fairly certain the ports on the front are USB 2.0. I do have a Dell Dimension 4600 and will check the specs on it to be certain. I'll post back when I have some more details. If anyone else has any ideas for me try as well, feel free to post them here.

I checked with the specs and the front ports are USB 2.0.

I also went ahead and completely uninstalled the hardware/software and reinstalled it. The device in question is a Trendnet Bluetooth USB adapter. It seems that the device is not seen when plugged into the front ports.

When I perform the software installation it gets to a point where it asks for the device to be plugged in. If I plug it into the front ports, nothing happens. As soon as I plug it into one of the back ports, you hear the little hardware installation tone and the software installation automatically continues.

Anyone else have any ideas why the front ports would not work and the rear ports do with this device?

Does the Trendnet adapter have any kind of light on it to indicate that it's getting power? Does it come on when you connect it to the front ports?
