Re-imaging problem

Just had a HD crash but I did have it backed up on a USB drive. I've reloaded Windows 7-64 bit on a new HD but when I try to restore the image windows can not find image. I even copied the image on to the operating HD, still windows can't find it???
I've never used a image back up before so I'm a little lost.

Images are a special type of file. You have to restore them using the Boot CD from the program that created the image. For example, if it is Acronis TruImage, put the cd in the drive, boot from it and then select the "restore image" option. Most of these program prompt you to create a boot cd or rescue cd when they are installed or when you make your image. Hopefully, you did so.

Thanks for the reply bruce.
I used the Windows image back up (VHD I think) and am trying to use windows to restore the image.

Just an update. Remembered that I had backed it up once with the software that came with the toshiba drive. So I booted from the boot-disc only to find out that the acronis software will only restore from a WD drive. Are you kidding me what is toshiba doing shipping this software with there drive???

Are you booting from a system repair disk ( created in windows ) and trying to restore from there?

I don't believe you can do an image restore from within the OS .. (WIn7)


( P.S. Thanks for this thread.. Just remembered I haven't backed up in a couple of weeks.. Doing it now..:) )

Download the trial of Acronis from here

Burn it as an .iso to a cd and you should be able to boot from it
and do the restore. The version you have was intended to migrate
from an old drive to a new one and they require at least 1 drive to
match the maker of the site you downloaded the software from.

I don't believe Windows 7 will restore a backup image from the system drive. Is the image you created on an USB HDD? Is the drive showing up in Explorer when you attach it to the computer? The external drive will need to appear in Explorer and have a drive letter assigned for Windows to see the image on it.

An image is called an image because it is special. It is a bootable product and thus considers aspects of the geometry of the media onto which it has been imaged.

Thus, Im not sure you can just copy an image to another HDD as if it were a file (unless it is an ISO). I have not have had to do this, but it may be required to image the HDD (having the image your are wanting to copy) onto the new or other drive.

Windows 7 just makes a backup file that can be copied anywhere, just like any other image (which are always just a file).

Ok a lot of good info.
The boot CD I use was created by the Arconis software.
The image is on a usb drive that windows sees. After it searches and and doesn't find the image it gives you the option of looking for a driver. Using that option I can browse the drive that holds the image.
Lastly I did download the trial version. Do I have to burn an ISO or can I use the option to run it from Windows??

Burn it to cd and run it from there. It is not suggested to run a restore from within windows.

I know it doesn't matter now but the Acronis WD edition doesn't care if you're restoring to or from a WD drive or any other drive. You can restore from a Seagate to a Seagate just as long as the software detects a WD drive in your system when it loads.

Okay I'll burn it to a CD. Does it have to be a bootable disc?
Yep the problem is I don't have a WD drive right now lowrider, the software came with a toshiba.
Got some other things to do but I'll burn that CD later and give it a try.

WD probably has a copy of Acronis that will work if you have a WD drive in your system.

Yes burn a bootable disc, you can create one from within the Acronis WD program.

If you don't have a WD drive don't sweat it, just use this:

It's one of the best free ones I have tried. I never had an issue with their 2010 version, just pay attention to what you're doing. You can create a bootable CD with it.

This is highly rated free imaging software, at least according to Maximum PC. I haven't restored an image, but I was highly impressed with the speed of creating an image. I'll use this in addition to the Windows 7 backup imaging stuff.

Just to update you all who tried to help. Nothing worked, seems the windows backup (vhd) is corrupt. Who knows what happened to the Acronis backed (tib) it could not be found. Tried using the acronis software to convert the vhd to tib but get an error that says it's corrupt. So no image for me, at least it looks like all my "files and folders" are saved in zip files.
