rdram selection for gateway P4

PingSpike

I don't really know a ton about rdram. I know it needs to be installed in pairs and this PC has a pair of 256mb rimms.

I've been looking at these on newegg and it seems like they should work fine. But are there any hangups with rdram besides pair installation that I should be aware of?

I have 4 x Samsung 256MB of RDRAM pulled from a working Gateway P4...

If you have good Heatware and are interested I can ship them to you first to test and if you want them I can do $200 for all 4.

They are Gateway pulls that DO NOT work in my Dell Dimension 8200 so they are of no use to me... Hence the low price...

Thats for the offer JRock, I would take you up on it if this were my machine. Since its a work PC I probably should stay out of the realm of used stuff. 😛

I just cracked the case and it has all 4 slots populated with what appears to be 128mb rimms, which means the easy upgrade to 1 gig isn't easy. I might just recommend snagging a new motherboard and ddr.

N/P just thought I would offer. 🙂

If you have 4 slots and you plan to use 2 sticks of RDRAM you will need to install 2 continuity rimms (CRIMMS). These just look like memory modules without any chips on it. It's just a bare PCB.

Since you are upgrading an existing setup you probably won't have to worry about this though.

Just thought I would mention that RDRAM needs a continuous ring to opperate.

Ahhhhh good ole RDRAM! Reminds me of my days with my old Dell Dimension 8200! That thing was a beast, really! I always liked RDRAM. But yes, the RAM that you picked out from NewEgg will work just fine, and yes, you will need continuity rimms.

So if I'm to understand correctly...you can't leave empty slots in an rdram setup? You have to install the continuity rimms...which sound sort of like a scsi terminator in function?

I think I'm just going to recommend she get a new motherboard and some ddr. At ~$90 per stick and the fact that it would only get her a net 256mb more of ram its just not cost effective to buy more of this ram that isn't even really used anymore. I can snag a decent intel chipset board for ~$60 and 1 gig of corsair for $75.

Why did you guys like rdram? It was expensive as hell...and from what I saw, didn't really offer much more performance for its high price premium.

at this point i would say go for a new mobo/ram...

rdram is NOT going to drop that much in price, and no matter what, DO NOT buy from gateway... we charge like 299.99 for a 512mb stick, and you have to buy two 🙁

(i think 256mb sticks are 179.99 each)
