RDRAM Question

My friend just started working with video lately... but his Dell only has a pitiful 256MB of RDRAM. He wants to get more... or he needs more is closer to the truth... and right now he only has a pair of 128MB sticks... can he get another pair of 256MBs and put them in the remaining two slots or do all the sticks have to be the same size? Thanks guys.

go ahead at get pair of 256mb. all sticks do not have to be sqame, only the pair. get 16bit rdram.

Cool thanks... You think 768 is enough? He's just transferring home videos onto DVDs... and minor editing here and there? I 512MB stick is $200...

make sure tha this mobo can support 512mb per dimms.

Also, make sure you get the right speed, 1066Mhz, 800Mhz and I think there are a couple lower speeds. The faster the speed, the more expensive the ram will be.

Yes, be sure to watch for this, because otherwise you will have an annoying discovery when you try to insert 32bit modules in 16bit slots

As for your question on how much memory you need, I also am doing a similar project with family videos to DVD and I didn't notice much gains between 512mb - 1024mb of PC3200 memory under XP. I think the sweet spot with XP is 512mb, but more memory does help a bit. Its kind of law of diminishing returns with it. Moving however from 256mb to 512mb will yield substantial speed gains.

Make sure theyre the same latency!!!!!!!
Very important. Read the label on the ones he has! it should be either 40 or 45 ns or something like that.
Matching the speed is a nobrainer, but people dont look at the latency too often.

RDRAM is dead though and im glad.
