With the GFX940 patches in full swing since first week of March, it is looking like MI300 is not far in the distant future!
Usually AMD takes around 3Qs to get the support in LLVM and amdgpu. Lately, since RDNA2 the window they push to add support for new devices is much reduced to prevent leaks.
But looking at the flurry of code in LLVM, it is a lot of commits. Maybe because US Govt is starting to prepare the SW environment for El Capitan (Maybe to avoid slow bring up situation like Frontier for example)

See here for the GFX940 specific commits
Or Phoronix

There is a lot more if you know whom to follow in LLVM review chains (before getting merged to github), but I am not going to link AMD employees.

I am starting to think MI300 will launch around the same time like Hopper probably only a couple of months later!
Although I believe Hopper had problems not having a host CPU capable of doing PCIe 5 in the very near future therefore it might have gotten pushed back a bit until SPR and Genoa arrives later in 2022.
If PVC slips again I believe MI300 could launch before it :grimacing:

This is nuts, MI100/200/300 cadence is impressive.

Picked up a 9070 (non XT, MSRP) Reaper at Microcenter on release. The line was long and wrapped around the building. I think everyone was able to get something.

I am coming from an 7900XT (side grade for me). The Reaper cards are the only 2 slot cards that are actually 2 slots! I use U.2 to PCIe adapter cards for my rig, and with the 7900XT one of my pcie5 slot was blocked, however with the 9070, I can use it.

XFX Mercury 7900 XTX set to "Quiet Mode" in Adrenaline, GPU temp at ~66c (I need to setup the graphs for hot spot and GPU frequency, I guess):

Reran it and eventually hot spot got to 89c, board power 390W, frequency hovering around 2.7ghz. Anyway, hopefully the Mercury 9070xt cooler is as solid as this one! :)

Cross gen will be even worse for PS6
i think it will be less worse,

there was such a big jump in so many ways from PS4 to PS5 ,IO , CPU , GPU. There was very large departures ,

for PS5 to PS6 its just going to be more of the same but better , just make the PS5 version have no/limited RT , use a simpler upscalers ( PSSR) .etc

GPU tech has moved far slower from start of PS5 to now then any other time in console history.

That will still be cross gen though - radically designed games that can only run on PS6 will appear way later, it's not just about RT - PS5 got very weak CPU and that can't be fixed, installment base will be huge, most stuff will be cross gen for many many years.

it does not have a very weak CPU , thats smoking crack. Zen2 is also very power efficient. The relative difference between jaguar and Zen2 , Zen2 and Zen5/6 is worlds apart. jaguar to Zen2 is like ~6x single thread and like 10X multithread ( way better multi core caching system ). Zen2 to Zen 5 is like 1.6x.

It will be like switch, devs will downgrade the PS5 ports

Plus we got games like GoW, Spider-Man and GoT on the Jaguar cores. PS5 will be a lower tier of the PlayStation family when PS6 releases

Yes, and that is known as ... cross-gen!
PS5 will be a lower tier of the PlayStation family when PS6 releases
Yes, and because of huge installment base most games will be ... cross-gen!

Which means radical new stuff enabled by great new hardware of PS6 will take many many years to appear because it will be a commercial suicide to release only on PS6 for at least the first 4-5 years.

it does not have a very weak CPU
It will be a Jaguar of processors by the time PS6 is out.

At this point I can conclude its AMD's software holding them back a lot in Blender. HIP isn't great.

That said RDNA4 made major improvements to RT and glad to see that is reflecting in Blender when compared to RDNA3.

The 9070 XT is not even beating the 4070 means that Optix has years of optimisation.
NV hasn't built a gaming GPU since Pascal.
You can figure out the rest of the story.

The console offtopic talk needs to stop or Imma start wishing the posts away to the cornfield.

FSR 4 is good and only going to get better.

This card goes very well with white-themed rainbow vomit. My niece would LOVE the shiny lights.

Oh, and it include a metal adjustable graphics card support which is like Atlas holding the world. The plastic tip pops off to reveal a screwdriver. Nifty. I see where the $100+ markup comes from.

Has 5V ARGB cable to sync up with your seizure-inducing light show. Pew pew!

Running Unigine Superposition 1080p extreme currently.

Is there a PC monitor inside the case sitting on the video card? What is that? It's a screen inside the case showing a keyboard and it's inside the case? What the hell am I looking at? My brain is absolutely short circuiting trying to make sense of that.

AMD first attempt is great. I feel like they will keep on working with Sony and deliver a better product than NV. Sony has experience in upscaling tech.
I think they all end up so good no vendor can market their version as an advantage. Same for ray and path tracing, they will probably become more vendor agnostic as time goes by and the features become ubiquitous. With the exceptions of games these companies throw resources at to showcase their own tech.

Difference between models

90% for RTX 5090, maybe RDNA5 will be closer, but not faster

I would follow AMD guidelines for PSU. The spikes are pretty high.

I do play minecraft with shaders and I so I would need a better PSU
