Why is Rdesktop SOO MUCH Slower than WinXP Remote Desktop Connection? It's faster on a Win98 P133 than it is on my P4 1.8 Linux (Debian) Machine, both with super fast business DSL.

What gives? Is TSClient better/faster?? Is there a command to improve it?

The reason for this is probably because its a free implemenation of a protocol that isn't published... They're probably trying to figure out the various portions of the protocol that doesn't go by the standard implemenation that they mention on their page..

on every system I've used rdesktop on its been ALOT faster than MS's implementation of the client... its not normally slow, something is wrong... I cant tell you what though, I really dont know. Does it do it when you connect to just one client? or to more than one?

hmm...with thatt command line, i get "ERROR: recv: Connection reset by peer"

it's like it tries to connect, and the box appears, but then closes

I dont know of a way in rdesktop, however you should be able to as a policy in windows... I'll boot up vmware here in a sec and take a look

ok, this should do it, go into gpedit.msc and then go to

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services

Then you'll see a setting in the right pane called "Force removal of remote desktop wallpaper", enable this and it should do away with your wallpaper through rdesktop.

oh, and you might be using an older version of rdesktop.. -D should be the same as --bpp, however just type rdesktop at your cli and it'll show you the proper switches.

Rdesktop use exactly the same ICA protocol as MS. Citrix gave ICA to the opensource world soon after Citrix sold ICA to MS :)

Rdesktop-Open , Gnome Pro , XRdesktop , GRdesktop , and RDC (for Mac OS X).

My favorite that I often use is Gnome Pro, and have also uses GRdesktop as frontend for Rdesktop. I haven't had a chance to play with XRdestop, but heard that it is very configurable (rummor has it that it is a little unstable, same go for Rdesktop-Open). I have only had played with RDC & found that it work quite well on the Mac flat form.

i couldn't get those others to work. i was able however to upgrade to the latest Rdesktop, where it has more commands, but the background still persists!! slows it down a lot

any ideas?
