every once in a while, several times a day actually, her internet will just cut out and she had to wait about 5-10mins before it starts working again. is there a chance that this modem just plain stinks? is there issues with this particular model?

I've had nothing but problems with that particular brand of modem, you should have her ask her ISP if she can exchange it for a different model.
 
Yup, the RCA 215, 225 & 235's all have issues. As they get older some part of the power conenction begins to fail and become very sensitive (it seems a slight breeze will cause the modem to reset). The issues were resolved with the 245 (differnt power plug/adaptor).
