how does it avoid overlap? like, how does it know that the section i'm cracking isn't the same as the guy next door? or does it overlap?

dnets master key server has a log it issues a key or set of keys to a proxy that dnet has setup and then logs the keys that are issued...there is no overlap of people having the same keys and working on them...

...Unless you're cracking random keys. Even in that case, if you've connected recently, you're searching a relatively empty range, and even if you haven't, less than a third of the keys have been checked so far.

If you do happen upon a key someone's already submitted, you won't get credit, but it's relatively rare.

what about umm say somebody's machine ( no names mentioned ) needed to be reloaded and about oh I dont know, 1100 blocks were lost. would those blocks theoretically reappear ( to be cracked by some other person )if say such a travesty were to happen?

Yeah NoendInsight someone else will get to crack those blocks eventually. Just don't let it happen again ok? 😎

Oh dang. Does that mean that my currently still missing 2400 blocks are actually randoms or have already been cracked by others? The blocks have been missing for nearly 2 weeks already.

jinsonxu, if you submitted work that wasnt credited the day after, Its just lost.

Either you've been cracking randoms that were already done by someone else, or (worse) youve been cracking valid blocks, that someone else did as randoms in the same time (rare but happens).

Hehe, no way can i compare with you! 🙂

I've taken to carrying around 2 floppy disks in my pocket when i go to school, 1 for my mini-team and members list, another for all the different configs.

Tried recruiting from other forums. But the attempt was in vain since they decided to create their own team. 🙁

My next target are the school computers. 18Ghz there to get. But i'm not very sure whether i can convince the tech guy to do it.

What i dream of is recruiting a whole lab full of G4s.

LeBlatt, that should not happen. Only keys from a very narrow band will be used as random keys and those do not overlap the bands of regular keys. Check out the FAQ at d.net, I remember reading about it a while ago.
