RC5 problems

Hey guys, i just starting using RC5 a few days ago and i have a question.
I am running a Celeron 466@525 with 128megs for ram, 7200 rpm drive, winMe etc etc etc. When i first load up the software after a reboot and while i am using the computer, i am doing about 1,300,000 keys/s up to 1,700,000 keys/s but after a few hours, it drops to 20,000 keys/s to 60,000 keys/s for no reason. Even if i leave the computer all night, its still down to 20,000 by the morning. I am %95 sure i have that i have all the power saving stuff turned off. Anyone have any ideas?
1,700,000 keys/s is a lot more then 20,000 keys/s and i would like to help the AnandTech team. I am going to join up tonight🙂

😕

Some things to check.

3D screensavers, they eat cycles. Nuke them.
Background processes, like for example, Microsoft Findfast or anything related to Microsoft Office. Kill them with prejudice.
If you have an SB Live, kill the crap that loads at startup.
Make sure that you disable power management both in the BIOS and Windows, not just one or the other.

Are you running anything like RAIN or CPU idle by any chance?

Also, make sure you are not also doing OGR.

Thanks for replying so fast.
Nope i dont have any screensavers running, i have Findfast and all that Microsoft Office crap nuked and i also have the sblive stuff turned off. I must be missing some of the power management stuff, but i am sure that i turned it off.
I'll hunt around, hopefully i can find why.

By the way, i just joined the team: ) I look forward to helping the stats.

If you haven't found it already, you can find the power management settings at Start > Settings > Control Panel > Power Management. I have everything under the 'Power Schemes' tab set to Never. Though you could set the monitor one to whatever you like obviously. I tend to just turn off my monitor manually when I'm not using the computer.

Hope that helps something,
Nohr.

Have you tried CTRL-ALT-DEL to see what visible tasks are running?

I like to kill everything but Explorer, and my virus software.

One place to head these off at the pass, if you don't need
them is Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System
Information, Tools, System Configuration Utility, Startup,
and uncheck anything you don't want loaded.

that sounds really wierd.... i remember someone talking about a program that would allow you to see whats running and how much of the cpu its using ... similar to windows 2k's task man... anyone here know what its called.. i'm really at a loss right now

Well first thing i did when i saw the rate drop was double check everything. And i CTRL-ALT-DEL about 5 times a day when i am bored to see whats running🙂 and nothing but the basices are running.
BUT i just came home after 5 hours, of which the computer was not in use and by the log, the rate had just dropped from 1,300,000 keys/s to 30,000keys/s so i checked CTRL-ALT-DEL right away and there was something running. As soon as i closed it, the rate jumped back up. I think it was called "winmgt" or something, but my memory is kind of bad now cause i have been drinking. Anyone know what that is?

Hi Cumb0 and welcome to the TeAm!! 🙂😀

I looked around for winmgt and this is what I found:

... If you are using Windows, WinMGT is highly recommended. WinMGT has been optimized to handle large .sgf files like Kogo's Software Joseki Dictionary. I've been told that cgoban is a good .sgf file viewer for Linux/Unix; there are also Macintosh & Windows version of cgoban.

What I found appears to be a tutorial for the game "Go." Does that ring a bell with you?

I think the program you are thinking of is called Wintop I just started running it. Seems to do what you describe.

Hey, think i got it🙂
After checking my power settings 100 times and checking what was loaded on startup, i starting thinking of everything in windows that could cause something to load up. The only thing that came to me was, windows "Scheduled Tasks" which i never use and have it turned off on startup anyway. When i loaded up "Scheduled Tasks" i saw that 2 things were scheduled to run at different times each day, both of which were never there before. I quicky looked at them, they were stuff installed from different apps i have installed over the last few weeks. I deleted the "Scheduled Tasks" and went to bed. When i woke up 12 hours later, RC5 was still doing over a million keys/s and there was nothing loaded when i did a CTRL-ALT-DEL.

SO good news, everything works fine.
Thanks again guys : )

That's good to hear! It annoys me that programmers think that they know what we want better than we do and don't give an option to install those type of things (can you say MS Office and FindFast? :|). At least now you can sleep happy knowing that your computer is doing its best to kick some DPC butt! 😀
