rc5--new guy here

I was going through the forums today and and came here, I never did before- I always hear about SETI but that doesn't interest me but rc5 sounded cool, I searched on google for it and downloaded a linux client from distributed.net. Is that all there is too it? I'm doing a "cruncher" as i type. I thought they used more processor power than this.

Are there any links for new people? the FAQ's are boring

what else should I know?

What "teams are there"- should I join one?

Thanks this looks like it might be fun ( or an excuse to upgrade 🙂 )

Welcome.

I'm sure the RC5 guys will be along shortly to recruit you🙂

I don't know of any help sites for newbies, but this is a great place to come if you have any questions.
Too bad SETI doesn't interest you, we are always looking for more CPU power, too.😉

I find the DC projects are a great excuse to upgrade!

Welcome onboard mcveigh. Here's what you need to do:

First of all, I assume from your message that you've already got the client up and running under Linux. Terrific! First you need to make sure that you are doing the right project. There are two different project that distributed.net is running: RC5 and OGR. To set this, type "./dnetc -config" (minus the quotes of course) at a shell prompt. This will take you to the configuration screen that you probably saw the first time you started the client. Type "2" then "9". This will produce a list of projects that the client can run. Only two projects are open at this point: RC5 and OGR. This option sets which your client will run. If you want to run RC5, just make sure that RC5 is listed before OGR. If you would rather do OGR, make sure it is listed before RC5. Then hit enter to return to the configuration screen. Type "10" and set this option to "4". This tells the client to work on a project for as long as the project is going before moving onto the next project. This will ensure that you are always running RC5 (or OGR) and not switching back and forth between the two.

Next, let the client do some work. Once you have a fair number of packets, flush them and retrieve some more using "./dnetc -update" Within a day or two you should see your email address show up on dnet's stats page. Stats for RC5 can be found here, while stats for OGR can be found here. Once you have your email address in dnet's database, request your password from them. Once you get this in an email, just go to Team Anandtech's stats and click "I want to join this team!" It's as simple as that!

If you have any other questions, please feel free to post here. You'll get all the responses you ever wanted! 😉

mcveigh Are you looking for a miniteam to join? Kind of a team within the TeAm? I think these guys are misunderstanding you. I don't even know what all the miniteams are, but most of them have star trek based names. I guess it's kind of a theme here.

mcveigh: I welcome you aboard the rc5 bandwagon... and I also invite you to take a look at TA Cube. I'm not going to list its virtues and the like, i'll let you decide. There are plenty of miniteams and where you end up (if you join one at all) is up to you, just extending a warm hellow from the borg... Take a look @ our stats, you wont be dissapointed 😛..

Welcome to the team!

I am going to offer you a position on the fastest growing miniteam(just like TACube) in Team Anandtech. TA-The Federation members also recieve babes and a hot-tub, but that is not all of it, we have our own server so you can view your current stats(updated every 15min) and we also have a lot of other perks as well. If you want to be a member of the strongest force in TA, then the Federation has your number(err handle😉)

Welcome to the Team.

There are many mini teams within Team Anandtech. Pick whichever you like or crack on your own as a memeber of Team Anandtech.

MiniTeams:
TACube (The Borg)
The Federation
Klingons
The Asylum (I think they haven't been swallowed by another team)
I believe we have some Cardassians out there
TWTA (Team Within Team Anandtech)
The Naked Crackers
etc. etc. I am sure I missed some

Regardless of whether you join a mini team or not, welcome. I am sure you will soon find that this forum is a great place to discuss just about anything. Everything in this world can be made to be on topic and related to your keyrate. 🙂

thanks guy's I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy inside🙂

Apple Talking-- thanks for the info I thought I had configured it correctly but I got home from the fireworks tonight and saw it was OGR I was working on!

I can't seem to get RC5 listed as first I can get it in fron of OGR though is this OK?

current setting "DES,CSC,RC5,OGR"

I set my prority level to 4 also

And I became a member of teamanandtech.com so I guess I need to join up on dnet's database
Thanks again everyone!

mcveigh:

Yeah, that list looks alright. Just make sure you have option 2:10 (in other words, type "2" then "10&quot😉 set to "4." The name of the option is "Additional buffer-level checking."

Once you see your name in the stats -- it should be the day after you flush some blocks -- then join up with Team Anandtech!!

Good luck!

A big WELCOME!

You speak of setting the priority level... Usually, rc5 runs well on lowest priority (default) and upping it will not increase the output. it will just make the computer irresponsive.
And if yu happen to have access to other computers (work, friends, school, etc) install the client on as many as you can, with the owners permission, to boost your stats. You can just copy over the dnetc.ini to avoid configuring each time.

Welcome, i just started doing this 42 days ago, and I have bought 2 new computers in those 42 days... granted, it's fun, and my stats are starting to go up... but this is expensive... geek competition at its greatest... 🙂

oh yeah, and "The Klingon Empire" is always looking for more members... 🙂 (trying to get 15 new ones for Netopia's contest) Email me for details... NDGeist@home.com
