rc5 Mac Client

How do you install rc5 onto a mac? There is a computer lab of g-4s next to my dorm and i am told i can put it onto them. I just need to know how now...Thx

you need to "unstuff it"....basically, the mac equivalent of Unzipping it. I think most macs come with it standard, but I admit that its been a long time since I've used a mac (my sisters last summer when I put it on her G3 😉 )

Once you unstuff it you need to make an alias of either the Dnet client, faceless Dnet, or Start & Hide and put it in the Startup items folder in the system folder.

Using the Dnet client alias will start the client in the center of the screen when the computer starts up, Start & Hide will start the client in the running aplications bar thing (like the taskbar for windows), and Faceless Dnet will start the client totally invisible, the only way you can control it is with scripts.

Hope this helps. Good luck with thoes G4s *drool*.

WTG Homer! 🙂 Just make sure they have MacOS 9 or higher; otherwise the client won't be nearly as efficient as it can be.

grrrrrrr. i think they had a change of mind. i ran it on one today and no problems, but they dont want the startup to be changed

there are close to 15 i think.

The startup isn't changed, there is just one additional thing that is started at bootup, you're just putting an innocent alias in the startup folder 😉 Even if you are not allowed to do that, you should still go ahead and install the client. If they run 24/7 you just have to start the client once and you're done. If they shut them down during the night, I guess to have to manage the heard daily, starting the client on all machines right after you get out of bed 😉 It would really be a pity not to assimilate such a nice cracking herd.

I'd do anything you can to get permission to assimilate those G4s! For 15 G4s (assuming 450 MHz), that lab would turn out 18,901 wu a day. If they are 500 MHz, that number jumps to 21,000 wu a day!!!!!!!!

Of course, those numbers don't take into account when someone is actually USING the computer, but you get the idea...

I am going to try to get a job next semester as a lab assistant. I ran it on a few today for the few hours i was in there doing some homework. Im still keeping my fingers crossed.

I hate mac mice and those tiny ass keyboards.

they are 450's btw, and my school is in the process of replacing a lot of computers this year and next. As well as moving up to an oc-3...WOohooO

Not getting it yet marketsons 🙁 Only in the lab for an hour or so and the machine i was on only did 20 blocks in that time. Which seems really odd. I think i will go back tomorrow and load it on one and see what happens to it during the day. If it goes smoothly i will put it on a few more..

oh yeah, about stats too, i am not on this team anymore but i did 400,000 out of the 600,000 i have done. A small group of friends picked it up. Sorry guys.

Well, I thought I was going to assimilate a G4 400 on the way home from work today, but ran into a little complication 🙁

Before leaving the office for today, I loaded the client onto a zip disk and a floppy, with the intent of copying it onto the system and downloading enough blocks to keep it happy until Monday. Stupid me ASSUMED it would have one of the 2 kinds of drives, but I stopped at the school on my way home from work to find only a CD drive. Guess I'll have to wait til next week for that and just load it with a week and a half worth of blocks for over Christmas vacation. Need to use an external Zip (which I normally carry with me but didnt feel like taking home this weekend) or burn it to a CD. Yes, I could just download it I suppose, but then I'd have to go through the trouble of installing Stuffit too, and it was too long of a week to spend any more time at work, even for a G4.

After the break it wont be idle anymore, so this will only be a temporary assimilation since Macs have terrible multitasking and its going to be used as a server. I just need a few extra thousand blocks to make sure I make my personal RC5 goal of 1 million 🙂 by my 2yr dnet anniversary on 12/29.
