I have this Plane!

I'm an experienced RC pilot and I bought this on a lark. It is a sweet little flyer. I paid 69.95 at a hobby show.

Pros
Charges very quickly (5 minutes)
Charger is built into the Control unit, very handy
Climbs like a homesick angel.
Good control at full power with differential power
Not so good control at idle
Easy to control but allow yourself lotsa room. I doesn't turn on a dime

Cons
Very light (that's why it climbs so well)
Very fragile ( That's why it's light)
Must be flown in very very light or no wind conditions
Batteries get extremely hot. Wait 5-10 minutes between charges if you can (I couldn't)
Repairs need to be done lightly. Don't smear the glue too heavily
Much care must be taken in aligning the repaired parts
Give yourself plenty of room, at least a ball field

Biggest drawback to differential power for control is that maximum control occurs at full throttle. This is OK unless your heading for a tree at low altitude. In this situation you would prefer to back off the throttle and execute a quick turn. Now this is probably more of a problem for someone with RC experience where our brains are already wired with habitual reactions.

Recommended: Absolutely!

In the evening it is great fun to tool around the neighborhood just above the roof tops.

Do yourself a favor and pick an open field on a no wind evening for first flights. Plan ahead and have a basic flight pattern in mind. When launching let the plane climb out straight making small corrections until you reach about 30-40 feet. Execute wide turns by making short inputs. Don't hold the turn too long or it will spiral down into a high speed diving turn. Blip the controls. When in doubt get off the throttle and allow the plane to correct itself.

No license required. Works on a common frequency with short range. By the way, if it goes out of range it goes to idle.

Also, try some glides at idle power to make sure it glides at a shallow stable angle. Years ago, many years ago, RC planes where all single channel (rudder only) which required the plane to be very stable and self recovering. In other words they were free flight models which you could interrupt their direction (turn). It took hours of trimming the aircraft for free flight. That's why this plane is a real engineering marvel. The overall planform is that of a hand launch glider, very stable, quick recovery. You will be surprised at the climb performance, I was.
 
Hey Waco, since you have experience with this one, about how long do the bateries last before you are charging again??? Looks like it might be a fun little flyer, especially since I have ballfields about 2 minutes from my house!

I never timed it. I would say at least 5 minutes, probably longer. The fact that you can fast charge it so quickly (5 minutes) really made the flight time no problem. Besides 5 minutes is longer then you think. 5isalive's deal with the second battery is ideal. The real problem with the batteries is heat. The fast charging really heats the battery, as does the discharging during flight. These batteries get very very hot! Too hot to handle. The second battery would allow the battery to cool off a little between flights. This would also extend the service life of the batteries.

If you ever get into mainstream model airplanes you will find some of the most creative and funny people around. Recently, I went to an Indoor meet where they fly mostly rubber powered planes. Years ago I flew indoor hand launched gliders. These guys had some of the most imaginative aircraft you will see anywhere. The average age was probably 70. Anyhow, this one young guy (35) built a scale hang glider with a wing span of about 12-14". The way you flew it was to launch it just in front and slightly above your forehead. Then you would walk, pushing the air with your head, creating a micro wave of lift, just enough to keep the thing flying about 18" in front of you. It took awhile to get the hang of it but, eventually I was walking around the gym with this little glider leading the way. It was histerical.

If you ever get a chance to go to an Indoor model airplane meet, go. These guys are masters and very friendly.
