I think there's an aston martin with an option for a full linn setup. :)

but yeah, flac on a portable player is only a worthwhile idea if you have space to spare. I use q7 vorbis for the karma, which is between 1/5 and 1/4 the size of the flacs.

If lossy compression (for home use/archiving) is getting you 1/2 to 1/4 the filesize, I think it makes sense to just be safe, rip to flac, and not worry about it. hard drives are cheap these days.

It's very easy to cheat in tests like these.

For a proper test the files need to be inaccessible for any kind of spectral or computational analysis.

You'd need a abchr/abx utility to support this (abchr for java and win are available).

I can tell you from experience that iTunes 4.8/QT6.52 AAC 128kbps CBR HQ/Stereo already approaches cd quality in 99% of the cases for perhaps 90% of the people.

See www.hydrogenaudio.org for more information.

I have not met any person who can identify 128kbps AAC (above settings) from original 44.1kHz CD audio PCM on any given music sample (or even half of samples).

Of course, I'd be delighted if such a person contact me :)
