Rattling noise

Hi... I'm having an issue with my car and I figured I'd ask here since it's convenient. I've searched the web and couldn't find any answers to my specific issue, so here it is:

I have a 2006 Corolla and recently, I've noticed that there's a sound coming from the car. The sound is a high pitched, metallic rattling noise as if a chain was loose and dragging on the floor (albeit a very thin chain). What's different on this issue compared to others I found online is that the noise is present only when the car is in motion, with no distinguishable sound between driving slow or fast. The noise stops ONLY when I apply even the slightest pressure to the brakes, after which it stops for the duration of the braking and sometimes for a few minutes after.

My brother (who had the car before me) suggested that I replace the brake pads, which I had been planned to do last week but didn't have the chance. However, I would like to confirm that it is only the brake pads and not something that's more serious (by the way, the brakes make no noise when they're applied). If this is something that could be serious, I might be better off switching cars with my parents whose commute is significantly less than mine.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!!

Brake pads. The wear indicators on the pads are squealing on the rotors, causing the noise. They are built this way on purpose, so that you replace the (cheap) brake pads before they get so worn down that the gouge the (relatively expensive) rotors.

I had a seized caliper which made a sound somewhat like you're describing. Noise went away when I braked.

My first thought would be the dust shield rattling on the caliper. This would explain why the sound does not change as you speed up, since both parts do no rotate.

Thanks for the reply.

Black: your response is much like what my brother was describing, so I'll make sure to change my pads this weekend.

As for the other responses, I'll certainly ask them to check out the calipers as well.
