What about people who are heavy, who work out several times per week, who do not eat twinkies or hohos or doritos or any of that shit, who do not drink any sugary drinks, and who eat slowly so that the "trigger" that says "I'm no longer hungry" goes off, and stop eating as soon as they no longer feel painfully hungry, who never eat late at night?
If they are heavy is that "lack of self control?"
I peaked around 320 or so, and have cut most sugars, and changed my lifestyle a lot, got a elliptical, use it regularly for 20-30 mins at a time, and I lost some weight yes, but I've been stable around 300 pounds with no more loss.
I have tried "smaller portions", but then my stomach make growling noises and I feel hungry 24 hours per day. Essentially, my choices are I can be fat, and happy, or I can be miserable and uncomfortable 24 hours per day, and possibly less fat.
That is not lack of self control, that is simply choosing the better option. I suspect most people would choose being a little bit overweight vs feeling like they are starving all the time.... Also, my metabolism is not slow. It's actually very high, If I could tolerate the hunger and cut down to 3000 or so calories per day, I would shed weight like crazy, but, typically, I eat around 4000 or else I feel starving/hungry.
Also, pretty much all of the OTC appetite suppressants, and many of the prescription appetite suppressants have been removed from the market or are narcotic/controlled substances.
If the problem was simply "self control" there would be a LOT less fat people. 100 years ago there were a lot less fat people in the USA vs today, is that because people have less self control? Or is it because there are so many more unhealthy options, and unhealthy desk jobs, and unhealthy everything? Also, what about genetics, being heavy/fat would enable a person to survive longer during times when food is scarce or lacking. Thus, as a survival trait, genetically, some people are more hard wired to be heavy than others.
Blanket statements claiming lack of self control are idiotic at best.
Lack of self control is a contributing factor, but it's far from an all encompassing answer.
