I'm probably going to choose RAM according to what's on sale when I order (in about a month). The same could apply to DVD burner.

I'm shooting for around $1500, total price. I also plan to OC the e6600 to something stable (3.2 ghz?), which I'll be asking more about when I actually get the thing. I would use this computer for multimedia production (Photoshop, flash, after effects, etc.) so the beefiness is justified. And being able to play Crysis would just be dandy 🙂

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Not bad.
1. Change the power supply for a Seasonic or Enermax Liberty
2. Change the Zalman 9500 for a 9700. Also don't get an AM2 one, 😕
3. Change the 680i motherboard for a Gigabyte DS3 rev3.3 (save cash, fvck SLi)
 
Good call on the CPU cooler, haha. I made this list real quick so I'm glad you caught that.

Could you explain why you'd change the MOBO and Power Supply? What makes the Seasonic worth paying twice as much?

Quality. Especially in power supplies, you get what you pay for. Seasonic are amongst the highest rated and well regarded manufacturers. Better to pay a bit more for peace of mind now than have problems later.
I'd change the motherboard because the DS3 overclocks incredibly well, and because you can save cash by getting it instead of an SLI board (and SLI is a waste of money).
 
Good advice by Roguestar. If you don't want to pay that much for a PSU, go to frys.com. They randomly have deals on good Antec PSUs (500 Earthwatts, 550 HE) for $40 after rebate. You can't beat that for bang-for-buck.

I thinnk frys has a deal right now for Antec PSUs. The Earthwatts ones are made by Seasonic (I'm pretty sure)
 
If you still want that mobo tho get a A1 revision not the one you have chosen. Also for the PSU id get either a corsair or seasonic PSU
 
Change out the PSU to an ENermax Liberty, and as was stated, you don't need an SLI mobo. Waste of money. THe gigabyte is a better fit........

Two more questions: For the PSU, will 500 watts be good enough? Also, I heard Vista 32-bit won't handle 4 GB of RAM properly. Is that true? And in that case... is Vista 64-bit ready driver-wise?

Not a bad selection once you change out the PSU and mobo (especially if you don't need SLI). Any 32bit OS (Vista or XP) will not allow you to fully utilize 4GB of ram. How much you'll actually be able to use depends on a few factors. If you want to get the full 4GB + you'll need to get the 64bit version of XP or Vista.

Also you may want to really review your version of Vista. I have the ultimate version and the biz version and so far I could have lived without the Ultimate version.
 
500 watts should be fine, assuming you aren't planning on going sli (as long as its from a good brand, seasonic, corsair, pc power and cooling, enermax, ...), though outside of upfront cost it cant hurt to get a monster power supply. As for RAM, vista 64 is stable and mostly compatible (as long as you don't have any 16bit software, or older software that includes it own drivers).
 
Thanks for all your help guys, I'll make the those changes. I'm buying this system at the end of June, so I'll bump the thread according to what's on sale at NewEgg (or if something better comes out in the meantime).

Just making sure, these are the apps that I NEED to be running stable and quick as balls:

Photoshop CS2 (and the whole CS2 studio)
Flash 8
Dreamweaver 8
Filezilla (or something like it)

I have a zalman 9700 led. It's crazy looking! I would get a p35 mobo. There should be tons of reviews by the end of june on them so you can make a good decision on which to buy. Also, since you're waiting till end of june, why not go to july 22 and get a Q6600 instead of e6600? My cousin has an e6600 and I can't wait to paste him with my Q6600!
 
I've read in several articles that july 22 is the day. http://forums.legitreviews.com/about9837.html I've seen that chart on several sites, too.

I've heard that it is somewhat more difficult to OC a quadcore, but I would take 3.2 ghz Q6600 over a 3.5ghz e6600 any day! I considered getting an e6850, instead, but the quad core is just too tempting.

Really, let's face it, intel has deliberately crippled c2d because amd has had nothing to throw at them for a year now. The e6850 will run at 333 x 9, while the q6600 runs at 266 x 9. How many e6600's out there today aren't really just underclocked e6850's?
 
Ugh. I don't know if I can wait that long 🙁 🙁

Perhaps if it's confirmed to be in July I'll hold out... but if that's just a rumor then I'll pee everywhere and no one will be happy.
