Hi All

Started a thread like this previously but a kindly soul pointed out I had put it in the wrong forum (doh!). So....

- Core 2 Quad 6600 (plan to clock up to 3ghtz or so)
- Thermaltake Ultra 120 Cooler
- Gigabyte GA P35C Mobo
- 4gigs of 8800 Ram
- 8800 GTX Graphics Card
- 500gig HDD
- 520w Corsair PSU
- Antec 900 Gaming case
- Vista 64 Premium

Any suggestions/criticisms?

I only have 1 small suggestion. 64-bit OS's sometimes have compatibility problems with some games and drivers. I recommend installing the 32-bit version then you won't have to worry about this.

I'm assuming you have your drives and monitor ready to go too.

Looks really good though. I dont't see any other real issues from the info that you have given me.

Thanks guys

Sorry - should have given a bit more info...

The machine will primarily be used for gaming. I'll be picking up the G0 stepping of the 6600 and plan to clock up to about 3 or 3.2 gigahertz. I could probably go higher but I'm not an especially confident overclocker so want to set a goal I know I can achieve (G0 should have no issues at 3 on air) and maybe see if I can take it a little higher once my confidence is up

The monitor and drives are indeed sorted. Monitor is Samsung 245B (24" 1900x1200 native, hence the need for the GTX graphics cards). Can't remember what the drives are but they work fine.

The Vista 64/32 thing is a really interesting point. I have seen some fairly mixed views on whether it is better to go for the 32 or 64 bit version and decided in the end that while 64 might have some initial problems it was probably a better choice in the long term.

Yeah, the whole 64/32 bit issue is no biggy. If you decide 64-bit is right for you then great, if not you can always install the 32bit version later.

Way overkill on the RAM. Get regular DDR2 800. High-speed RAM has no real-world benefits that warrant the premium.
Everything else is fine.

If you aren't set on the case, this looks like a nice alternative: Cooler Master 690 and will save you some bucks. Looks nice, simple and clean.

good on processor

booo on cpu heatsink

booo on mobo

didn't mention what ram but 4GB is always nice
8800GTX is nice but for the price I prefer the GS less money spent and still good performance. also depends what resolution your usually run

500GB is nice but you didn't mention the company or series also if it was IDE or SATA

Vista FTL!

case is ugly and PC Rice 😛 heh

Thanks guys

w00t - why boo on the mobo and ram? I'm open to suggestions if you have any alternatives

Re: Vista... yeah I'm having that debate with myself at the moment 🙂
