How important is it that the rears match the rest of the speakers?
Right now I've got a 3.1 setup but I have 2 speakers I could use for rears at my parents house. Both sets sound fine own their own but I've never tried them together. My current 3 are horn loaded but the other 2 are not. Thats really the only issue I see, think it'll work?
As long as they are approximately the same size in terms of transducer diameter (bass response) they will be fine. Just be sure to use a set up disc and SPL meter to set levels for the rear at the same as the levels of the fronts / center. So - Called "Golden Ear" engineers can only get about 1.5 db accuracy between sources. "Normal" people may only get 3 db accuracy. That's not good enough as you may have an overpowering movie experience as opposed to a sensational one.
Go to Rat Shack get an SPL meter. Place the meter at the main listening position and by using the reference tones on the set up disc, adjust the levels so that they are as close as you can manage. You should be able to get to within + or - .5 db. Then , sit back and enjoy !

That'll be $40.00 for consultation....... :D

Also, don't forget to use a meter correction chart for the RS meter. Even on C weighting and slow response, the RS meter needs up to a massive 20.5dB of correction. Without it, you'll be wildly off.

Granite Audio has an easy to use compensation numbers chart to use.

The front three are the most important to match. If you're doing mainly movie watching, having surrounds that don't match isn't going to be a huge deal.

If you're doing multi-channel audio it would make a bigger difference, but in movies surround speakers don't really even play very much in most movies.

I think I'd take unmatched surround speakers over no surround speakers.

Hey dude, thanks for all the help.

Here is the link - http://www.artisonusa.com/documents/SketchTower9-27-05.pdf

any opinions?

pictures coming soon...as we set it up piece by piece

With a -3dB rating of 80hz, I think a sub would be first on my list of upgrades.

we just got a subwoofer, and installed some older speakers as the 3 surround speakers in the back.

it sounds great now with analog cables for movies...now i'm just waiting for the digital ones.

Sorry I didn't see that. What did you get?

If your DVD player and Receiver have digital coaxial connections, a spare RCA cable should work for you if you have one.

Well, we're already way over budget, so we got a cheaper ~$100 subwoofer to supplement the system we already bought: http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/speakers/YSTSW215.htm . I've set the crossover Hz to 80. btw, what does the variable high-cut filter on the subwoofer do?

So, we now have a 6.1 system set up.

I would have suggested a Dayton 12" for a cheap sub
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=300-635

If you're using the crossover on your receiver, just keep the high-cut filter up all the way on the sub to 150hz.

EDIT: I took a look at your pics
Seems like you have quite a bit of toe-in going for those front speakers. Have you tried playing with that at all?
What kind of speakers are the rest of the system?
Did you try putting a real center channel in front to see how much of a difference it makes?

We did have them quite a bit farther apart before, but the center channel they were supposed to create did not sound as good (it sounded too close to the couch, and too far from the tv).

They are some old POS yamaha speakers...not sure the model. This would probably be our first thing we upgrade if we ever upgrade anything.

We did, and the center is definitely more "distinct" with a real center if you are sitting away from the center of the couch. But, we decided that with the pieces we have now it would be better to use that speaker as a rear surround speaker and use the built in center of the two fronts.

So where did you get those Artisan speakers? (sorry if you answered that already and I missed it)

I haven't heard of them before. Did you demo anything else in the pricerange before getting them?

We got the Artison speakers at Tweeter. We did demo some others at the store, but liked this the best.

Humm, I am not sure I like the design of those speakers, presumabliy the angled drivers would be aimed at the sweetspot to create a phantom centre with information from the other soeaker. This creates big problems for you because of cancellations and boosts of frequencies. think about tossing 2 stones into the lake and you'll see what I mean. A dedicated centre would be a preferred choice.

Having said that, you already got the mains and appear to like them, so ignore me.
