I am building my first comp next month annd have a good idea of what im going to build. Need some advice and suggestions from some pros out there. I am a noob so I am not planning on oc'ing because I dont know how. I may oc my vid card with a software app but not my processor unless someone showed me how to do it. Here are my specs
Proc-AMD 64 3000 Venice core
Mobo-MSI K8N N4 skt 939 ATX mobo
RAM- Not sure about RAM, need suggestions, but I know I want a gig
Vid Card-Either this one: Leadtek PX6600GT TDH Extreme Geforce 6600GT 128MB GDDR3 PCI-Express x16 Video Card or a X800XL
Case-Thermaltake Soprano VB1430BWS Black Steel/Plastic ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 430W Power Supply
Hard Drive-Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 SATA NCQ ST3120827AS 120GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard Drive
Optical drives- I have a cd/drd/rw drive from my old comp I am using

So I really just want to know what u guys think and any suggestions. Im up in the air about the vid card cause there is a $100 difference and I really wanted to only spend about $800. I also have win xp so thats not a problem. Thx for any suggestions u guys have
 
RAM: Corsair Value Select if you are not going to overclocks.
Video Card: X800XL is quite a bit faster than than a 6600GT. owever you might want to wait a couple of weeks for the new GEN cards to be released and prices on current gen cards to drop.

Rest looks good.
 
Try and get a 7200.8 if you can since it's a newer revision.
The x800XL will be better bang for the buck.
Corsair Value Select 1GB dual-channel kit. They're cheap, cheap, cheap now.

The 7200.8's are supposed to be quieter than the 7200.7's because they use fluid-dynamic bearings instead of ball-bearings. However, storagereview.com does not have kind words for their 400 GB model as it's a slower performer. So, any 7200.8 that's less capacity than 400 GB should be fine. But given the guy's specs, he's probably not going that high in storage anyway.

Your listed parts (including the Video Card and HD) look good; and just like most have said, go with the Corsair Value Select for RAMs.
 
Maybe you can help me out with a question regarding building. Although you're here to post a question, would you be willing to help me out with one?

If so, here's the question

1. You are the lead systems analyst on a new software project for your company. You have been given the responsibility to choose the hardware platform for the project. Your supervisor, a business major, has come to you with some suggestions. He states, "We just want to process and retrieve data real fast. We also want the ability to store lots of information." What is your recommendation?
 
Are the "next gen" Nvidia cards really coming out soon... or are they just announcing them soon. I haven't found any info about them.

The X800XL is a great choice... again bang for the buck.

What PSU are you going to use? you may want to get a 24pin Power Supply.

What about an SATA II drive?

sata 2 is useless for now. Modern drives can't even top ata 133, let alone sata 1.

its just a stupid marketing gimmick

No don't waste any time on a SATAII drive. SATAII is a waste right now, there is no point at all to go that route.

ok, thx so far, what about video cards. Is the X800XL that much better than the Pro or non-pro X800. I mena bang for the buck cause again im trying to save a little money wherever I can. So on the same lines would a 6600GT be comparable to a x800 non-pro or X800pro??
 
i believe x800 series will be faster than 6600gt..
and within the x800 series it goes x800 < x800pro < x800 xl < x800 xt.. if i remember it correctly..
