it adds up 2 about 950 dollars. I am goin to purchase an aftermarket heatsink and fan 2 more gigs of ram.

I also plan on the time being using my own hardrive and dvd burner.
If they make sli less problematic (quating someone on this sight) I will upgrade to sli

I do have a few questions

1. will a 670 watt powersupplie be ok for sli (maybe future for 2 8800) and ok for overclocking a q6600 to at least 3ghz
2 Will the ram that i placed up there the pny work with the mother board msi p6n platinum.
3 how is my system for overclockign what should i expect.

Where are you buying this ? 2gb of ddr800 should come for 80$ AR at newegg. Btw, 670w PSU's don't come for 52$, unless there's some 50% of deal, otherwise it's a no go 😛 Go for the corsair 520hx or so. It will be tricky for sli, although I'm fairly sure it will handle dual 8800gts's and a overclocked qaud no problem. But sli with 8800gts isn't to smart anyways. Go with one card for now, and when you have more money to spend and want a better videocard, sell your old one, and buy a new, single card. SLI is only an option for the top of the line cards, but a single 8800gtx is often better then sli-ed 8800gts's for the same money.

That mobo, what does it cost? I really suggest a 130$ or so asus p5k for your qaud. Theres some deal on the abit ip35 pro on newegg btw, for 70$ I think, which is also a pretty good deal. That's it I guess. Right now, 6/10, for the processor, videocard, and the fact that your asking for opinions 🙂

I am buying the 2g or ram from newegg. it was orignally 159 its 40 dollaros off at 119. its high performance for gaming. the motherboard cost 149.99

ok how abotu this setup. i went with an sli mobo still but it is an asus p5n. I really want to go with an sli just incase they do end up improving perforamance of sli in the futute.

the power supply was orignally 190 dollars newegg has it for 60 dollars off and if you buy it win a motherboard you get another 50 dollars off.

I dun like the mobo, keeping the SLI option open isn't worth it, for 20$ less you've got yourself a p5k, that can handle penryn cpu's. Gigabyte ds3r isn't bad either for 130ish. Both are pretty good for oc-ing qauds.

As for the ram, erm, not worth it either 😛 DDR 800 will run 1:1 with the q6600 even if you put the FSB at 400, which means your q6600 will run at 3.6ghz with a multiplier of 9. 3.6ghz would be pretty sweet, but it's unlikely you can keep it cool and stable at 3.6ghz, even with a thermalright extreme ultra. Even the g0 stepping runs hot, it's still a qaud ya know ^^ You're better of buying 4gb of ram for roughly 160$ AR. Timings of 5-5-5-15 vs 4-4-4-12 don't matter much if it all. Won't net you any extra fps, or extra speed when video editing.

And when spending 1000$, don't skimp on the PSU.

- edit

The ram is still not a very good idea, read above. Also don't expect SLI performance to improve, 2 cards will never result in exactly 200% of the performance of a single card. Reviews have shown that a gtx often beats sli-ed 8800gts's, and you need a bigger/better PSU so still not worth it. Drivers also suck for SLI, it's simply not a priority for nvidia/micrsoft, there's very few SLI owners. Plus your shooting yourself in the foot by not getting an p35 based mobo.

As for the PSU, I don't know powertek. Ask what people think of it on the PSU forum. For 20$ you've got yourself a trustworthy 520hx corsair though, so keep that option open.

what r the advantages with goin with a p35 mobo.

and what about

I'd get 4gb of this ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820145590

Advantages of going p35 is that you can put a PENRYN cpu in it, when they come out 11th of november. And since SLI sucks anyways, and I once again recommend you NOT to buy a SLI board, p35 simply is the way to go. Also, with a p5k or gigabyte dsr3 you've got yourself a good motherboard for overclocking an q6600, I'm not to sure about that MSI motherboard.

As for the coolermaster PSU, I own one myself, it works with my 8800gts 320mb and overclocked x2 3800+ @ 2.6ghz. It's a bit loud though. I bought it when I knew little about hardware, but it turned out to be a decent powersupply, nothing to write home about, but it's an okay PSU.

What does that antec PSU cost btw? I'd simply go with this PSU, http://www.newegg.com/Product/...9001&Tpk=corsair%2b520, or with this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817139003

Both will power your rig, the 520hx might be enough for sli-ing 8800gts's, the 450w corsair can't. But still do NOT go SLI, it saves you at least 30$ on the mobo, and money on the PSU.

i am also going to not recommend to use SLI, if you have alot of money to burn then it would be worth it, but not worth it in terms of price vs performance.

as was mentioned before, do not get a bad psu. corsair hx520 is great choice.
any psu listed here is a great choice. although i would recommend staying away from antec (even though some antec psu's are recommended) because of compatibility with some mobos' (sorry i don't have evidence/links of this, but i have read several cases of people having problems).

another good choice of mobo is abit ip35-pro.

also i would recommend cheaper ram. you can usually get ddr2-800 for less than $80 for 2gb (not overvolted 2.1v).

will all p35 be able to use this new chip and for this new chip what is it like a better quad or the new octo that everyone was talking about

and i would love to go with the corsar but the antec is part of a package with the case so it saves me some cash otherwise i would go with it. I have only got abotu 1k to spend this week and over the next few months ill be able to spend some more

SLI is really not worth it unless you need to run games on a huge monitor or you have deep pockets.

Really don't get that motherboard just for SLI. Get a P35 board like everyone else is telling you. They fair better with quad cores from what I've read. Instead of wasting money on TWO 8800GTS 320MB get one 8800GTX for less money. SLI is more of a hassle I think and chances are you'll never end up using it anyways. A single card solution is almost always better unless you NEED that much power. Especially considering the power and heat problems SLI brings with it.

Often the same cases also come WITHOUT a PSU, so you can get any PSU you like instead of being forced onto some shady PSU you might not even like. The antec PSU will probably hold up though, so it's nothing to really worry about ...

As for the p35 chispet mobo's, yes it will be able to utilize the new penryn cpu's. They have the sse4 instruction set which has shown major improvements over sse3, overall you could expect it to be 10-20% faster then core 2 duo. They also come with 12mb of cache and should run cooler and use less energy.

Another vote to forget about SLI. You will suffer buyers regret in the fall when a 9800GTX runs circles around your SLI setup. It's unlikely they will ever "iron out the kinks", and since hardly anybody uses it I would be suprised if it is still an option in a couple of years. We will start to see video cards with multiple GPU's instead.

And another vote to go with a p35 motherboard. My P5K Deluxe is so much better than my Asus P5N32-E SLI was.

Ok lol here it is hopefully my new setup. I had to go to the cooler master power supply. I found on the web that they where a desent name brand so i hope they didnt lie to me lol

here it is

its coming up

ok so please let me know what you think of this setup

Could also go for the gigabyte s3l, should come cheaper as well. On newegg you could also look into getting this mobo, http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813127031. Then spend the saved money on a good psu, like the corsair 450W. I OWN the cooler master 650w extreme power. It will work, it's to loud if you ask me though 😛 Would I have to pick again, it be the corsair 450w.

But you're on the money now, you've got a good build going now 🙂

Well, since you don't need ddr1066, you don't need a mobo that can handle ddr1066. S3l can handle ddr1066 btw, the abit can't. Up to you, but since you're on a budget, you really shouldn't be bothering with ddr1066.

hmm, since the above posts says there will be a new chip, and new 9800GTX out in fall, would it be wise to wait for it instead of buying now ?

im about to buy a new computer, but i wont have money for upgrades / new comps the next few years .. got around 2.500 $ to spend now though... 🙂

don't spend 2.5k ? You can make a decent rig for 1k as shown above, go with evga's stepup program, and upgrade your videocard later on. It's much better to spend 1.5k now, and another 1k in a year or a year and a half. Otherwise you're spending the extra 1k on very little extra performance which won't be what you'd expect from spending 1000$ extra.
