Rat problem

While making breakfast, I noticed a rat in the kitchen sink, obviously made me go WTF??!! I keep my place pretty clean (get it professionally cleaned monthly, and I clean up any spills right away). But I'm in a condo complex, and there a bunch of others next to the building I'm in. A few days ago I noticed a rat scurrying by a trash can next to a condo complex a few hundred feet down from my building. So they are around in the area. I should have just taken it from the sink and tossed it in the trash or something, but I forced it down the drain. Hopefully it'll make its way out of the system, dont want a dead rat in there. Should I call animal/pest control? I should at least notify the association that there is a rat problem in the area - hmm. I'm on the 2nd floor, the basement is community owned where all the boilers/oil tanks reside. It could have come in through there and a crack in the piping somewhere. The last thing I wanted to do was turn on the sink aerator and have dead rat parts in my drain.

you need to wipe away any trace of the markings that rat has left. to get rid of the smell, you're going to need something real strong. bleach alone won't be enough. mix 50% bleach and 50% ammonia in a bucket, and then wipe down your apartment with it.

I used to live in an old duplex and one day my room mate got up and went to take a crap and a huge rat was swimming in the bowl! after 3 flushes he went down. Guy from the city said there is supposed to be some type of flapper valve where the sewer line connects to the city sewer pipe and that is was probably stuck/missing. Needless to say we both used the crapper with a preemptive flush from there on out..

No, but it was a full grown adult rat. Just the thought of sitting down with your nut sack withing biting range still gives me the creeps to this day..

It came out of the drain? I don't think they can swim underwater very well so that most likely rules out that it came from the sewers, but it's quite possible as it only has to go through a couple P traps other then that it's not water all the way to the top.

Another possibility is that it's getting through the vents on top of the roof. I would start by putting mesh over those to see if it helps.

I suppose a backflow valve would MAYBE help but don't think a rat would activate it.

If you have a sump pit go check to make sure it's clean, you might have a surprise in there.

Or paint a target on the ceiling above the sink and pour concentrated sulfuric acid in the drain. The reaction will expel the contents of the trap often with great force skyward. If there is a rat skull as part of the rocket you may score a bulls eye with that!

That said, rats are NASTY! They only come second to helicopters on my shoit list.

LOL it's complicated but yes it's a noise I dread hearing when we are offshore.
