Man, I'm about as far as you can get from a Religico, (at least, without being an amoral ferret) and I've got some concerns with this stuff. On one hand, I can see all the cool stuff that can result from this (including welding my brain in robot armour with a giant buzzsaw).
On the other, we need to figure out exactly what are our ethical definitions and limits regarding non-human sentience and life. And those aren't easy questions. Look how much strife is caused by abortion and euthanasia. Not to mention animal rights. And those are relatively simple questions. Or, at least, our activities don't shift the bar every week.
People have been addressing these in one form or another for millennia. At least the thinkers have. And now we're throwing new scenarios up every day. If we're not going to decelerate the pace of scientific progress (which I don't think we should do, without very clear reasons as to why) then we need to accelerate the progress of ethical thought.
