Still, that's pretty good for basically a fully functional PC board. I'd be curious to try one as a regular desktop to see how well it does with basic web pages and stuff. I want to redesign my home automation system around a Pi as well. I'll have to get one some time.

Newark shows $42 for Canada, part no. 38Y6467. They are only making 20k/day, IIRC, so you will just have to put up with lead times, for now.

I turned mine into a media server. I hooked up a 1TB external drive to the USB3.0 port, and I have minidlna running on raspbian on it. I also put transmission on it. I plugged it right into my main home router and I can watch movies from it on my Xbox One which is also wired into the same router. The only sound it makes comes from the spinning in the external HDD.

Finally decided to order one from Newark. Also ordered a 50w 5v power supply. These will go in a NEMA cabinet along with other boards and stuff as I'll be redesigning my home automation system.

I wanted to get a 13.5v PSU to float a battery and then a DC-DC converter to go to 5 volts but that seemed like something hard to find. I'll just have to plug it into the main UPS. Not like it's going to use a noticeable amount of power. The 50w PSU is overkill, but have to account for relays and sensors and such.

Probably going to experiment and play around with it a lot before I actually use it in that project.

Is anybody making small/decent ARM boards with more horsepower? I've been toying around with Android-X86 as part of a DIY smart TV project. However, it's a bit flaky with some apps.

There's ODROID using Samsung's Exynos.

There's also Dragonboard if you want to play around with Snapdragon.

Finally there's the Dragonboard with the 810 if you want to play around with ARMv8. Although if all you wanted to do is play around with the new ARMv8 instruction set on actual hardware, an HTC Desire 510 smartphone would be the least expensive option (~$100).

I like the concept of the Pi. It's a great board to teach students programming and electronics without breaking the bank. It's pretty weak sauce though compared to even a lot of lower end smartphones. So it's not going to work well if you try using it for everyday computing.

i have at least 4 rpi around the house for streaming music n vids.
need another pi in the house to take photos/vids whenever the doorbell is rang. the rpi will then auto upload to my phone. should be a sweet project

PSU is 10 amps, that will power sensors and stuff around the house too.

Forgot to get a micro SD card though. I actually have one... somewhere... good luck trying to find that though, I'll have to order one. I'll probably put in a basic version of Linux and start messing around with this till I get to the point of putting it in production to take over my home automation stuff. Still need to decide how I want to mount all this, I have a 10x10 nema cabinet but it's kinda small, would be nice to do all the cross connects in the same cabinet.

its always a challenge making things look tidy with the rpi because all the inputs/outputs are all around the board. i hope 1 day they will reorganize everything to just 1 side.

For powering just the PI they have wall wart ones too which are the typical setup. They're micro USB.

I forgot to order a micro SD card for mine, so I recently ordered that from Amazon and it will be here in April. I'll probably mostly tinker around with the electronics side of it like the IO pins, and once I'm comfortable with the environment I'll probably start setting it up in a NEMA box to run my home monitoring/automation stuff. I have some DS208B 1-wire sensors on the way too for temperature. It's the same ones I currently use with a dedicated board but there's other areas I want to add sensors to.

Right now I have an Arduino and a separate relay controller board hooked up to a server but with the Pi it will be able to act as a stand alone device. I can then repurpose the server for something else.

Though, it's almost tempting to use this new one for my HTPC then repurpose the HTPC one for home automation.

I used the 16 GB MicroSD card and USB power adapter from my old phone to get mine powered up.

I see that Javaws doesn't seem to be supported, so there goes my plan of running my workplace Java app on it

I'm going to try to rig an irrigation system for my garden this year, so we'll see how that turns out.

I use a RaspPi2 as my Master Bedroom HTPC running Kodi. Excellent!!! I was using an older Model B and I had to overclock it and down res the thumbnails to make library surfing a tolerable experience but the RaspPi2 is smooth without having to do anything.

My primary HTPC is a Chromebox. It's great, but for anything but my primary location I will be getting a RaspPi2. I can just stick it on the back of the TV with double sided tape, FLIRC IR receiver and a 1.5 foot HDMI cable for $3. The FLIRC is sensitive enough that I haven't found a situation where I even needed line of sight for the remote control. So, with a $15 WiFi adapter the only cable you have to see is the skinny power cable. It's really no more obtrusive than a Chromecast or FireTV stick.

You are welcome. The Pi 2 is a great Kodi box. Supports 3D video better than almost anything, and has better video quality than ANYTHING running Android. I am a huge fan.

I suggest the Mimic skin once Kodi is installed. It runs great/fast and in the Blue/Black color scheme it is maybe the best looking HTPC GUI ever.
