rare/hard-to-find sodas/pops

When I lived in Michigan from 2005-2007, they had a Mountain Dew Diet Code Red and a Barq's Diet Red Cream Soda (and also regular versions). I really liked both of these.

Since moving to TX, I have been unable to find either one of them at any store. I spoke with a manager at HEB (regional grocery store chain) and he called his distributor who claimed that the Mountain Dew Diet Code Red was not even produced at any of their facilities in TX, and was therefore not available to anyone in TX. I figured the story would be the same with the red cream soda, so I didn't bother asking.

Has anyone seen either of these two recently? If so, where are you located and what store did you see it at? Both the diet code red and the red cream soda are listed as current products on their respective companies' websites, so I don't think they have been discontinued entirely.

If anyone else is looking for something rare, post it here and maybe we can use this as a central place to locate hard-to-find drinks 😉 Or if you can recommend another drink that tastes identical and is more widely available, that would work too.

I did see this site:

but their prices seem ridiculous. ($465 for a 12 pack of Pepsi Blue :Q, although that one was discontinued IIRC).

I work for pepsi and I can tell you all the stores I go to in Oregon have diet code red. Seems weird no stores in Texas carry it.

not really. In Idaho and Utah root-beer is everywhere, yet when I went back east it was fairly hard to find. (definitively not at every restaurant)

Diet Code Red is easy to find up here, Mello Yello is the only thing I like that seems to be getting rare. I shall burn some bitches down if Coke tries to discontinue it.

I can't remember ever seeing diet code red in Missouri. I haven't seen mello yello in a very long time.

Ah, something redeeming about living in Michigan. 😉
I love Faygo red cream soda!

Cheerwine is hard to find pretty much everywhere 😛

Red soda made with cane sugar only.

I absolutely love Cheerwine, it's a shame it's only limited to a small geographical area.

surge is impossible now, maybe they discontinued.

Surge was killed off maybe 10 years ago now.
They replaced it with something called Vault, though I don't see much of it anymore either.
It's really tough to find Big Red on the west coast and I haven't seen Mello Yellow west of the Mississippi in quite a long time.

Yeah, I wish we had a Meijer here. I thought they were better than WalMart. That's where I always bought the 2 sodas mentioned in the OP.

Cheerwine is the BEST coke there is. To this day I have no idea why it's so hard to find. They could overtake all the other cokes in a heartbeat.

The wikipedia link says it was available as a fountain drink until 2002:

Interestingly, Vault is very easy to find here. I buy it quite often.

Wikipedia says Big Red was invented in Waco, TX, so I'd imagine it's pretty easy to find here too 😉 I've never tried it though.

The regional sales are odd. My kids come home from Boston & NYC & take home cases of Vernors & Diet Vernors. They can't keep enough around & can't find it locally.

I liked 7UP Tropical Splash. Its been discontinued for about 2 years now.

Vernors is still common here.

Mountain Dew Diet Code Red

To the op...here's a replacement....

"Diet Drop Red" from Kroger in the 2 liter bottle for the win....wait, is Kroger even in Texas?

Regardless, you might find a generic version (such as the above) in a local store there somewhere....good luck.

Birch Beer is really hard to find in the South East at least.

Birch Beer on "tap" (soda fountain) is the best!

The World of Coke does have it though but no where locally seems to carry it for some reason.

mmm, birch beer is some good stuff! I actually prefer it to many of the big name brand root beers, much lighter taste. I never even heard of it until visiting my grandparents in MD and they had a bottle.

a 12 pack of pineapple fanta is extremely rare for me to find. i see the 2 liter bottles and the regular 12oz bottle, but no cans...🙁
