I personally would buy a card that would last 2 years or so, cause almost nothing can last any longer and still feel snappy. 680 is a great card, but I'd just get a 300 or so version of the 6xx line when it debutes which I think would be decent for 2 years, then get another upgrade then. it probably saves you money but also, get you better feature set. 250-300 normally is a sweetspot where you get most for money.

Need some more information. What are your other system specs because if you're rocking a core 2 quad a 680 is a waste

I have a Q9650 (with 8GB ram), what would be the fastest card I could use? Im thinking the core2quads are going to have real long useful lives

4.6-4.8 Ghz 2600k will be like 30%+ faster than a 4 GHz 920 beside being smoother even at the same FPS.

Clock to clock, the increase in performance wil be just 15-20% usually but the experience will be significantly better with the 2600k especially when you go in the sub 60 FPS domain with the 920.

IMO if you can spare $500 on a GPU, upgrade to a Ivy 3770k at 4.5+ as well. It will be worth it :)
