Raptors really worth it?

Better all around speed... For photoshop and games, I will not be raiding.

I was thinking about an X-fi..... Hmmm

4200 X2
2 Gb Ocz Gold
250 Wd 8mb
Msi Mobo
7800gt

It'll help some with photoshop, and there will be a small improvement in load times for games, but over all to me it wasn't worth it. I traded my raid-0 36gb raptors for a 160GB WD 3G drive, and didn't notice any big differance. Granted the 74gb raptor is faster than the 36gb raptors, but to me not worth the cost.

I agree that the raptor's not worth the $2/GB. It's undeniably a fast drive, but in everyday tasks, including gaming/level loading, much cheaper drives come close to matching it's performance.

I don't know but from what I've read I would proabably be annoyed by the noise, and I cannot justify to myself to pay the price premium. But would I like to have one in my rig? hell yes!

It's a rather simple cost-benefit analysis. If the benefit to you justifies the price, go for it. Else, a normal HD is best.

I have several of em, but I prefer to burn stuff to DVD than store it on HDs. The speed boost is noticable to me, and even more so in RAID 0.
If you play games where you have significant load time between areas, or you use a lot of apps that read heavily on the HD, then you will enjoy this drive.
If it does not please you, sell it and hop on one of the 250-300 GB Sata/Sata2 for around $100 deals going on. Hell, get 2 and go RAID 🙂

Nope. I've had two in RAID 0, and now just have a single 80GB 7200rpm drive. The difference is very small.

Raptors are not a good value. And for gaming systems, money is much better spent on a faster video card.

If you're the type of person that buys specific RAM because the chips on it can normally overclock 10% higher than others... or pays $50 extra for a video card with RAM that's 0.1ns faster than the majority of other brands... or buys a processor and tests 16 different combinations of bus, multiplier, and memory ratios... you'll enjoy a Raptor.

If you're the type of person who would rather buy a $400 Dell and add some RAM for $100 and a decent video card for $200... don't get a Raptor.

If that was directed at me, well, all i can say is I'd bet my $900 Dell will blow away a ton of $900 BYO's. At least in gaming, and at the time when I purchased/upgraded it.

But, yeah, I pretty much agree with your statements.

My feeling is the 74MB verison is somwhat worth it if you can find it for $125 on a hot deal like I did.

Why? it's the boot and apps drive for me and does increase performance while at the same time I don't have space problems since all files are on two 160MB seagates (ones shut off)

I only use about 40GB on my C.

If it's the only drive you have and need more space? Hell no. there are 250MB $100 drives out there with 8MB cache and are almost as fast.
