Raptor

Western Digital Raptor hard drive. I know its not for everyone but I rather tell if its worth it or not by actually using it to see if its worth it then guess.

Yeah, I doubt any store would let you open up a retail package, try it out, then decide not to buy the now used item. Just buy it from Newegg, and return it if you don't want it.

read the reviews online

spend 30 minutes reading what other people said about it.

that is as close as you are coming to finding out how it will perform.

Raptors are at the end of their lifecycle.

With that said they are still very good performing drives. But, to get that performance you had to sacrifice storage capacity. Now that the hitachi tk1000 1TB drive is out you do not have to sacrifice storage for performance.

The new Hitachi has comparable performance numbers to the Raptor 150 with 6-7 times the storage capacity.

But keep in mind.. the difference between a performance drive and a budget drive is measured in seconds. The boot up time for a performance drive over a budget drive may be something like 5-10 seconds. Your defrag might be 10-20 seconds quicker. Stuff like that.

For me.. I have no need for storage. I bought a 74gb raptor and short stroked it to 32gb for fat32. It is about as fast and peppy as I can expect on a desktop machine. If you needed more than that kid of storage then raptors are not for you.

Yes. Fry's.

Raptors are not at the end of their lifecycle. You're probably jumping in the middle where the performance is still decent.

I remember when people bought Raptors all last year when the 74GB GD Raptors were still popular. The 7200.9s ran over them and so did the 7200.8s. Yet people bought the Raptors. If you buy a 74GB ADFD Raptor, those are definitely quite fast.

The Raptor is sexy for a boot drive, and I can guarantee you it's faster in general than my 7200.10. I installed 2 sets of XP on both of them after I got my 7200.10 and then I compared. The Raptor boots faster, but when you RAID the 7200.10s, boot time is actually faster in the RAID-0 array. Still, the Raptor is nothing short of slow.

Is it worth the money? Probably not. Given I only have 4 drive bays and 4 SATA ports, I deseperately need more HD space at the moment.

What about getting one Raptor 150 GB and a 500 GB 7200 rpm HITACHI?

I have a older maxtor 7200 rpm 200 gig for backup.

JESUS CHRIST STOP MAKING THREADS ABOUT THE RAPTOR OK

EITHER BUY IT AND GO "OH, LIKE HALF A SECOND OFF MY LOAD TIMES" OR DON'T, AND GO "OH, I STILL HAVE MONEY"

:|

Edit: For the OT crew it may help to know that OP has posted countless threads like this in General Hardware (my  forum). He needs to either bite the bullet or go back to sleep.

you eat lots of sugar? it's easy to get "addicted" to it mainly because your body becomes accustomed to it. you're going to feel very hungry often until you body adjusts.

Not huge amounts, I've barely had junk foods/sweets type things in the last three months, but I drink a lot of sugary energy drinks type things.

Those may have HFCS instead of real sugar, either way...good luck  btw, you will have to continue to intake caffeine to see if you're addicted to only sugar or not, those drinks have loads of caffeine. withdrawls from caffeine are worse, but only last about 4-5 days.

I live in Northern Ireland, we have real sugar in our drinks 😛. I stopped drinking coke about two months ago, to see if caffeine was affecting my ability to get a good night's sleep. Haven't had it since (except as a mixer in drinks 😉), so I'm past the caffeine stage already 😀.

bastard! HFCS is everywhere here in the states...real sugar ftw. let us know how it goes 🙂 btw, I assumed you were in the U.S.

Heh, I assume most people on the internet are in america. When I went to Florida to see my ex-girlfriend (long story 😉) the coke there wasn't as nice as ours. I'm cutting out fast food and I've been to the gym/training every day a week (except for fridays) so hopefully I'll get a bit more in shape too 🙂.

If I had a quarter for everytime people said a 7200rpm drive performs as well as a raptor, I'd be a rich man.

To the OP, you have to make a decision. Do you want to eek out the last few % points for a premium or go for mass storage with a slower drive?

For me, once I used a raptor, I cant go back. But I also have a NAS where I store all of my data, so I dont need storage on my local machine.

Sexy, but if u need more storage that might be an issue. I have a Raptor and I can't complain about speed, but I have a 250gb, and 2x320gbs besides my Raptor making 4 SATA drives. I'm maxed out. Throwing ou the 250gb will be a waste, unless I replace it wtih like a 1TB drive. The only other option is to discard the Raptor, but that's a chunk of money I paid for it and it's not even a year old yet.

Maybe the 74gb Raptor will do, but it's not that much cheaper anymore. If you're looking to save, the 74gb is the way to go, but hey 150 doesn't hurt either.

I love my Raptor Games load so much faster. If yoy have the extra $$ buy it. The hard drive /CD drive are the slowest parts of the computer.
