Some time ago, I remember from reading an article that Raid0 doesn't increase speed that much over a single raptor drive. Anyone still have link to that article? or any new information?

Thanks,

I thought there was only about 10-15% difference between UDMA and RAID0. Against Raptor, probably wouldn't see that much difference.

Just got to add that RAID0 is to be advised against just for the reason that you have twice as much chance as losing data/wasting time on reinstall etc. (Add up all the microseconds you save on RAID against a day reinstalling all your apps again (or 20 min for a clone))

the increase is closer to 1% in most applications...except some encoding where the difference is significant.

i just went from 1 single 150gb raptor windows vista to a 2 x 150gb vista in Raid 0 and it does feel a wee bit snappier than before. programs open faster, server map changes are faster and so are the spyware/virus scans.

my HDTach and CrystalMark benchmarks are as follows:

HD Tach:

2 x 150gb Raptor Raid 0 (Uli Sata R0 x2 Chill 20.0)
Burst Speed: 241.0MB/s
Random Access: 9.0ms
CPU Utilization: 6%
Average read 155.7MB/s

Seagate 320gb 7200.10 (ST332062)
Burst Speed: 132.9MB/s
Random Access: 13.1ms
CPU Utilization: 4%
Average read 65.61MB/s

CrystalDiskMark 1.0:

--------------------------------------------------

5, 50mb, C:Hard Disk [NTFS] (2 x 150gb Raptor Raid 0)

Wow

can you try a couple more real-time benchmarks - just for experiment - ie, copying a few gigs, etc. please please

uh i'm a noob when it comes to benchmarking but this is what i did: cut a 2.8gb folder of media files from my 320gb 7200.10 drive and pasted it in my 2 x 150gb Raptor Raid 0 setup and vice versa

copy 2.8GB folder from 7200.10 to 2 x 150gb Raptor Raid 0
2 min, 22 seconds

copy 2.8GB folder from 2 x 150gb Raptor Raid 0 to 7200.10
1 min, 56 seconds

dunno if that means anything since both hdd's are still being used...

142 seconds v 116 seconds.
That is great approx 25% decrease in time taken.

That is a lot better than the 10% I was reading about a few months ago.
Thanks a lot Louis.

I still personally wouldn't consider the RAID0 option though, as, if the controller goes, you need to find the exact same controller to continue with your RAID.

I have 10 raptors in RAID0 but for a different purpose than most users.

The speed scales very well *IF* the host bus adapter is chosen carefully for the application.

Raid0 will make no difference in gaming performance

except for server map changes every 15 minutes and every time you load the game up. other than that if you're looking for FPS then nope

it also makes my system overall snappier when opening up programs and spyware/virus scans

Show me where level loads improve...

Here are some examples to the contrary:

Thanks,

Link. MaxPC confirmed, as well as dozens of others. No new info over the last three years.
